Nice article about Burgess retiring and becoming a teacher. He comes across as a really top bloke as I'm sure he is. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29972022
Absolute credit to him. The easiest thing in the world wouldve been for him to sit on his arse in the treatment room picking up his (I assume) healthy salary of a new 2 year deal whilst trying to play a game every 6 weeks or so. He couldve even studied for his future career while injured. Not many - if any - in his position wouldve thrown away 2 years' guaranteed salary. Massive respect
Always liked Ben, very good target man also had a good partnership with Danny Allsop. When Danny was out injured for a while I saw Ben was quite good with his feet as well as his head. Massive respect to him, I wish him well for the future.
What a great article about a truly nice man who planned seriously for his life after football. His partnership up front with Danny Allsop was one of our best in modern times. Respect to you Ben Burgess. May you have a long and successful career in teaching. You obviously love it.
Was that first hat trick at the KC the worst hat-trick ever? Or was that another one that Big Ben scored at home? (I'm pretty sure Ben himself described it as "the worst hat-trick ever".) Great guy and player though, loved him as a City player. Will always be one of my favourites.
Along with Hullsborough, one of my favourite ever memories from our 'climb up the leagues'. People seem to overlook how good Oxford were before that game, I'm sure it was well into the season and they were top by miles and unbeaten (I think) conceding about 10 goals all season and then we smashed 4 past them. Their defenders were literally looking at each other stunned as if to say "what the f** was that?" I LOVED the goal - was it the 3rd - when Danny dummied a massive clearance and span off his defender, leaving the ball to run through to BBB who then played in the still running Allsopp. That's the kind of understanding that only comes with a true partnership. People sometimes overlook Taylor cos he wasnt a particularly likeable man, but he gave us some f**ing wonderful memories that will last a lot longer than anything from this season (so far). Edit - it was the 2nd goal. Brilliant combination play:
Yep, people like Ben Burgess deserve to be lauded as inspirational. As he said himself, some thought he was mad for throwing away two years of 'basically' free money. A classy player at his level, and played a big part in our rise to where we are now. Cheers Ben
Another City legend - a really honest professional, sharp as a pin, great touch, and a very important part of City's progress through the leagues. I'm sure we'll all be wishing him well for a long and happy career.
Top man and formed a great partnership with Danny Allsopp. Best combo since Waggy and Chillo. imo. Glad he has settled well into the real world as a school teacher. He has just been on RH talk sport. Nice one Ben.
Really good read, would have been really easy to sit on however much he was on and studied whilst Tranmere were paying him. It also shows that players at that level whilst on good money still have to think about life after football and can't just walk into a cushty punditry or coaching job. I met him and Marc Joseph outside of Pozition the night of Andy Dawson's Testimonial. Both were top blokes and had time to have a chat with me whilst I was absolutely hammered. Apparently most of the ex players had got pissed in the hotel and never made it out and the others that had had gone home already.
Bloody hell, I almost welled up watching that. Seeing Big Ben and Danny and Elliot rampaging again. What good times they were.
