Spurs come into the match in 8th place in the Premier League on 14 points with Stoke in 13th place on 12 points. This will be the 88th time the two teams have met. The first ever meeting came at the Victoria Ground when Stoke City were playing as Stoke FC in the old first round of the FA Cup in February 1896 in a match Stoke won 5-0. Stoke had become one of the 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888 and the clubs were drawn together in the third round of the FA Cup in February 1899 at the Victoria Ground with Stoke winning 4-1. The first match at White Hart Lane between the clubs was a friendly played in March 1900 with Spurs, then Champions of the Southern League, beating Stoke 6-0. Spurs joined the Football League for the 1908-09 season, replacing Stoke who had resigned at the end of the previous season for financial reasons. The clubs didn't meet in a League match until April 1920 in the Second Division with Tottenham winning 2-0 at the Lane and 3-1 at the Victoria Ground. The first meeting in Division One came in March 1923 at Stoke which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Spurs won the reverse fixture at the Lane a week later 3-1. The clubs met for five seasons in the Second Division between 1928 to 1933 and for two seasons in Division One from 1934 to 1935. After the Second World War, the clubs met in the modern FA Cup third round in January 1947 at White Hart Lane which resulted in a 2-2 draw with Stoke winning the replay 1-0 thanks to a Stanley Matthews goal. Three years later, Spurs beat Stoke 1-0 away in the third round. Spurs were Football League Champions in 1950-51 and beat Stoke 6-1 at home but could only draw 0-0 away during that season. Every League game played between Spurs and Stoke since WW2 has taken place in the Top Flight, except for season 1977-78 when Spurs spent a single season in Division Two, beating Stoke 3-1 in both matches. The clubs met in the FA Cup in January 1976 with a 1-1 draw at the Lane followed by a 2-1 win for Stoke in the replay. Tottenham Hotspur were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 but Stoke City's first season in the competition only came in 2008-09 with Stoke winning 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium and Spurs winning 3-1 at the Lane. During 2009-10, Stoke won 1-0 at White Hart Lane with Spurs winning 2-1 at the Britannia. In 2010-11, Spurs did the "double" over Stoke, winning the away fixture 2-1 with a brace of goals from Gareth Bale and the home fixture 3-2 in April with a double from Peter Crouch and a Luka Modric goal. The teams met for the first time in the Football League (Carling) Cup 3rd round in September 2011 at Stoke and the match finished in a goalless draw after extra time. Stoke went on to win the penalty shoot-out 7-6. Spurs youngster Massimo Luongo penalty was saved by Thomas Sorensen. The 2011-12 Premier League game at the Britannia Stadium in December was won 2-1 by Stoke with a Matthew Etherington brace putting the Potters 2-0 up at half-time. Tottenham's Emmanuel Adebayor pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after 62 minutes but defender Younes Kaboul was sent-off after collecting two yellow cards. The match at White Hart Lane in March 2012 resulted in a 1-1 draw. After a goalless first half, Cameron Jerome put the visitors ahead after 75 minutes but a Rafael van der Vaart header in the dying moments of the game ensured that honours were even. The match at White Hart Lane in December 2012 finished in a goalless draw. The match had few clear-cut chances for either team. A Steven Nzonzi header after just 3 minutes put Stoke ahead in the match at Britannia Stadium in May 2013 but Clint Dempsey equalised after 20 minutes. The winning goal came from Emmanuel Adebayor seven minutes from time. Ryan Shawcross handled an Emmanuel Adebyor volley and Roberto Soldado scored the resulting penalty at White Hart Lane in December 2013 to put Spurs 1-0 up at half-time. Further goals in the second half from Mousa Dembélé and Aaron Lennon saw a comfortable 3-0 win for Tottenham. The reverse fixture at Stoke in April 2014 was decided by a 33rd minute Danny Rose goal for Tottenham. Overall, Spurs have won 44 games, Stoke have won 23 games and the remaining 20 matches of the 87 played have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full Record of Tottenham Hotspur v Stoke City Matches 1896-2015 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Stoke... A good informative post THFC At least Mr Bales isn't playing. He scored the BEST 2 goals in a game (against us at the Brit) that I have ever seen...2 left foot volleys, absolute screamers. Hope for a good game and may the best team win
Nick , it would be nice for a change if the better team did win. Stoke have been the better side in too many matches this season without picking up the three points. It is so frustrating. But that comes with being a Stoke supporter , it seems to have always been the way , with just the rare occasion of delight , such as the result against Man. C.
Sad but true KKB, t'was always thus. When you consider that you and I have been Stokies for (a combined) way over 100 years, toy know that it comes with the territory and know what?, I would not have it any other way. As ever, its always the hope that kill you
Firstly thanks THC for a fantastic post... all previous results/stats/players etc I found it very interesting. Kos kick a bow and Nicky counting my good self in that combined total that's well over 153 years and some as Stoke fans... Jeez that's also a lot of good bad and down right diabolical games. BUT like you Nick, it's what being a Stoke fan is all about. Kick a bow is right, better team over 90 mins didn't win on Sat, I don't care if Spurs batter us and we nick something on Sunday. In honesty, I don't think that recent games have seen us get the pts we did deserve but that's all in the game too! To be fair, Spurs what I have seen have not done that well (so far) but each game is different and I ONLY HOPE that Sparky will stick with the 11 who started the West Ham game. So that probably means he won't do that now just to hack me off. I see this game as a anything we get as a bonus, hence I would just go for it, not hairy fairy around, keep em quiet for an hour AKA the Saints game. As we all know. Pulis tried that a failed badly bar the odd freak result away from home. ATTACK is the best form of defence, if it's in their half they can't score can they. Easy innit. If only it was that simple.
A little over 54yrs supporting the Potters ..... what a roller coaster ride it's been but once a 'Stokie' always a 'Stokie' hey lads? As for Spurs, their double winning side of the early 60's were excellent and I have always liked them since then. This weekend? A draw would be a good result for us and it could be about which Spurs side turns up (and Stoke for that matter). Spurs have not really been that good this season so a point is always possible and we have won there in the past. Will MH be brave enough to select the same starting 11 as last week? I suspect he will revert to Crouch up front though.
Well guys...the four of us, plus SIS of course are after so many years, in need of counselling. Here's to the next combined 250 years
So true Nick but after 58years as a Stokie I am beyond help Hope you and Potts and the "regulars" are all ok I am surprised that compared to other seasons there is not much comment about our performances after the games unless there has been a controversial incident or criticsm from non Stokies Is it that we are so uninspiring at the BRIT and the realty is that we have gone back from last season and bottom half of the table is our future One obvious factor is our woeful lack of goals a d our leaky defence Prior to his latest injury Iassume that Huthy was fully fit otherwise why put him on the bench Is Wilson doing so well or has Huthy upset Hughes It is a strange season generally with so few points seperating 8th and the bottom 3 making in effect 3 mini leagues top 8 bottom 3 and the "inbetweeners" Dont want to upset Potts and other "Hughesites" but for me he is uninspirng and lacks passion with his after match comments being so bland and whilst on paper we have a decent squad there seems to be too much rotation to get a settled team Appreciate it is not easy if the majority want to play anx earn tbeir money SiS
Aah , I see what you did there Nick. And as for MH , some are bound to have questions. I watched the matches on tv tonight , and the one of interest to us just now , has allowed me to be optimistic about our chances to get a point/points on Sunday. 'spurs defence was breachable , and only very poor finishing by their opponents , ( forgotten who they were , I blame several litres of Innis & Gunn passing through my internals for this ) , saved them. I will choose to have no strong expectation of three points , and can then be very pleasantly surprised on Sunday. The drawback is that I shall be forced to watch the game on the local pub's #*$ platform. Ah well , that's life.
Yup me too KKB. I watched them against Swansea in my local and boy did I take some stick. As we all know, it comes with being a Stokie
Pick that one OUT Ye of little faith MESSI would be proud of a goal that good. Get the HELL IN! BOOM! This is Pott's over and out, absolutely BUZZING.
Can I say that I am more than pleasantly surprised - I am ecstatic. But should we be surprised at the result ? As has been discussed recently our team often comes up with unexpected results - some bad , some good - just not expected. Some stats. will show this : We have played five of the top eight sides and taken ten of the fifteen points. If we had achieved this level of production for the whole season , we would finish with seventy six points. We have also played five of the bottom seven sides and reaped only two points. This level for a whole season would have given us a fraction over fifteen points , and certain relegation. As Jimmy Greaves said "it's a funny old game " ; our team certainly challenges us to keep the faith , but innit great on days like today. Oh , and I want Stoke to give Bojan a brand new contract with a £75m buyout clause.
Nick and Kos I did say ATTACK was the best form of ..... Believe me, we outplayed them until the last 15 mins. Bojan? Give him the ball and he will SCORE! Good news for Stokies commeth from the North of London. Spurs we're well beaten and Arsene has a face like thunder. Keep the faith one and ALL. SIS I really HOPE you get to see MOTD mate and big hugs to your lovely wife Kathy. xx Ye mate who is well and truly over the moon Pott's
