A few quotes in this one, you may pick up on a few more though...

Seems Catts has full support from Poyet, and that is a good thing...

LEE CATTERMOLE’S suspension was an inevitable hurdle that Sunderland were going to face, insists Gus Poyet.

Midfielder Cattermole will miss this Sunday’s visit of Everton after incurring a one-match ban for a fifth yellow card of the campaign in Monday night’s victory at Crystal Palace.

Cattermole – who faces three weeks without competitive action due to the international break – spoke last week of how he was aware of the disciplinary tightrope he was walking, but accepted it could be an unavoidable side-effect to his combatative approach.

Head coach Poyet is equally philosophical, with Liam Bridcutt likely to be handed his first Premier League start of the season in place of Cattermole, although Jack Rodwell could also be an option after the £10million man missed the Palace game with a minor calf injury.

“Lee is Lee,” said Poyet. “It doesn’t bother me.

“It was going to happen sooner or later, especially in a game like that.

“It was a difficult game for the ref with so many fouls and tackles because you’re competing. Liam has been fine and is waiting.

“I’ve even been tempted every now and then to play them both together.”

While Bridcutt, who came off the bench to set up Sunderland’s third goal at Palace, is a ready-made replacement for Cattermole, Poyet is not blessed with such options at the back.

Patrick van Aanholt became the third defender in Sunderland’s first-team squad to head to the treatment table after the Dutch international dislocated his shoulder at Selhurst Park.

Sunderland are continuing to assess the extent of the lay-off facing van Aanholt, who joins Billy Jones and Sebastian Coates on the sidelines.

But Poyet was at least hugely impressed by the performance of debutant right-back Anthony Reveillere, who was forced to switch sides to replace van Aanholt at left-back.

“The only worry is if we lose Patrick for a while,” said Poyet.

“But good on Anthony, he had a great debut. He’s a player who knows football very well.

“He was probably thinking ‘thank you gaffer, you put me in for my first game in England against (Wilfried) Zaha and (Yannick) Bolasie, on a wet pitch’.

“But he did terrific. I’m very pleased for him.

“We knew when we signed him that he could play both sides. And I have to be honest and say Santi (Vergini) played better at right-back than centre-half.”

    I love gus me!!

The comments about Reveilliere (SP?) are class..

Also, remember Liverpool have one forward injured and that's why they're rubbish - we have 3 defenders (from a bank of 6) and 2 midfielders injured as well... But we're just rubbish becasue we're Sunderland - Injuries are part and parcel for us - only the big clubs get seriously affected by losing one or 2!

Have Cattermole and Bridcutt ever started the same game?

I prefer vergini at CB, but everyone had a different option. Happy that he plays, so unlucky not to score against palace.

I still think some of the yellows that Catts picks up are more to do with the name on the back of his shirt rather than the foul itself. A ref's way of managing the ferocity of the game

For this reason I don't think Gus should be so understanding publicly. He needs protecting more IMO

I think this was borne out by a table someone posted the other day of stats it seems Cattermole gets booked more for less fouls. I have never forgotten a derby a few years back where the ref went to Check Tiote that's five before booking him. Cattermole would have been long gone if that was him.

I am pleased someone else remembers that Marcus. I clearly remember the ref counting out on his fingers 'one two three four that's five'. to Tiote then booking him. Was it the game Cattermole got sent off at the final whistle?

Cattermole does himself no favours though, if you look at other players who play that position they foul or put off players more subtle so the ref gives a yellow after a build up of fouls, Catts is still flying in too quick, sometimes you cant win the ball and just have to rush the opposition into a mistake. The days of midfield battles has gone sadly, now its energy and water carriers with box to box lungs you need if you dont have flair.

There's two yellow's I've seen this season that were for nowt imo. I don't believe it's entirely because his reputation but bad officiating also. Way I see it he's had three deserved yellows this season which isn't much for a DM. He visibly stays on his feet much more these days and is doing well at it. I think everything in your post applied a few years ago, never a truer word said, but I don't think it applies now. He transforming his game, but it's a working progress, he'll still put daft tackle in from time to time.

Just think it's better to praise his progression rather than hold old habits against him when he's doing everything he can to adapt his game in an intelligent way. Doing very well at it to imo.

Changing the foundation of your game at 26 is no quick thing, especially as he's also learning CB duties as well as working on his passing range, you'll get a younger lad changing position or style of play with much more ease. Besides, everybody is different, everybody adapts to a different pace, he'll get there man, but patients is needed, something every Sunderland should posses yet often in short supply, he only started the adjustments a year ago.
