http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29879290 FIFA are meeting today to discuss 2022. No final decision will be made on the date of the tournament but it's likely a consensus will be reached. I fully expect another monumental FIFA ****-up
The only acceptable outcome is for Qatar to be stripped of the WC. Anything else is a disgrace, pure and simple. I expect a disgrace.
Yeah I agree. But FIFA have had their chance after their report into the bidding process was completed. Of course FIFA refused to make the report available to the public so it muddies the waters even further. No, I'm afraid the 2022 WC will be held in Qatar, subject to further security developments in the Middle-East.
Sky Sports News HQ ‏@SkySportsNewsHQ FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke says 2022 Qatar World Cup likely to be played in either January/February or November/December #SSNHQ
Here's my suggestion. Use 2022 as a catalyst to completely overhaul the football calendar in Europe and as a way of avoiding future club v country rows. It's a break with tradition so it will upset some people but first ask yourself why DOES the season start in August ? Anyway: Domestic season (league, cups and Europe) is played over 2 phases. First starts in March and finishes end June. July is devoid of all domestic games and is reserved for international games only (WC/Euro qualifiers etc) Domestic season second phase resumes August and finishes mid Nov. mid Nov to mid-December reserved for internationals (WC/Euro finals) mid-December until New Year domestic play-offs, finals, etc (maybe last couple of league games as well to coincide with Boxing Day/New Year) January and February close season, mid-winter break no football. Resume in March. Problem sorted no more season 2022/23 etc as the football season is played entirely in a calendar year. We all like watching football in the summer, this way there's no break June-July. It's a winner - I'm sending this off to Michel and Sepp as we speak.....
That's actually a good question Chilts. Why does it start in August? I always thought it was because it's after the summer hols. Anyone know the actual reason?
Not sure but originally it used start a few weeks later - probably mid-September so it didn't clash with the cricket season. Perhaps.
There is also a meeting in 5 days about the Africa Cup of Nations where Morocco might refuse to host the tournament over Ebola and the whole thing might be canceled. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/29870442
I suspect it was probably originally to do with both the ground being too hard in the summer months and that time is the period for re growing the pitch ready for the next season.
the WC tournament should only be played in countries where the game is played to a decent standard , where infrastructure can cope when bids are placed (not on some legacy promise) and at a time convenient for what are the most important leagues in the world . None of this faffing about lark , if as host you cant organise it with 3 months notice , then FIFA shouldnt trust a country with the tourney . knobheads!
The Africa Cup Of Nations is in trouble as well due to ebola Morocco the host nation want it postponed, CAF say they won't postpone it, Morocco may refuse to host it.
If Qatar had to give up the World Cup then Blatter and his cronies woud have to give back all the (alleged) bungs and backhanders and I couldn't see that happening ..
