40 years ago today. I still say it was a very quick count. Has anybody ever mentioned this ? Just watched a video of it and the referee seems to count very quickly. It's never a correct 10 count. No way ! Nobody was bothered because they wanted Ali to win.
Interesting article http://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...ngle-muhammad-ali-george-foreman-book-extract Apparently bummers thinks Ali was ****.
Most of Ali's big fights were controversial. Listen sat on his stool in the 1st fight and appeared to take a dive in the second one.
There'd have been a good wager on Ali. Foreman's fights had not gone further than two rounds, except for his fights against Joe Frazier and Ken Norton - both of whom had beaten Ali. So Foreman looked to be a shoe-in.......
I thought Ali did very little in the that fight apart from one round. And then Liston complained about a mystery shoulder problem.
Eh? In the first round he absolutely mullered him. Its one of the greatest rounds of boxing i have ever seen. Then a few rounds in, after the pasting continued, Ali complained of stinging in his eyes and he couldnt see - something that mysteriously happened to other Liston opponents.... Ali wanted to quit but Dundee sent him out to run for 2 rounds and then when his eyes cleared he continued with the battering of Sonny who then quit knowing he had zero chance.
It was interesting listen to 5 live last night, Hatton, Haye & Froch watched the fight with the presenter, and 2 of them had Ali ahead on points when the fight finished in the eighth round. The perception was that Foreman had pummeled Ali for more or less the eight rounds, but in their eyes he boxed clever and avoided a lot of Foremans punches.
Back in the 70s was about the last time I took any real interest in boxing. Even to me it was obvious there were lots of great, entertaining fighters especially in the heavyweight division. And when Ali fought Frazier I remember the morning before one of their fights rival chants broke out in school assembly of "Ali!" or "Frazier!". The excitement was huge.
Matty Mainwaring, the midfielder we released in 2012, has just announced he's becoming a professional boxer.
This is my favourite attacking move in boxing history. It's just f**ing incredible, like a lion, stalking, about to attack it's prey: Quality of the clip aint great, mind.
I see and then in the second fight Liston took a dive because he was bought off. You have said Ali is your hero but the reality is half of his fights were fixed. He got lucky against Foreman. He was just a big mouth with average ability. His later fights were embarrassing. Cooper was beating him until he got a cut. Just a myth based on what's happened to him in later life.
