Not sure if I'm alone, but I didn't think we played that well! I've seen us play a whole lot better and lose. Up until 5-0, Sunderland were trying hard (at least up front) but had very little idea what to do when they got the ball and at the back, well, I think everyone's said it. Pulled apart was an understatement. Steven Davis my man of the match, even though he only played 60 odd minutes. Morgan looked like he didn't break sweat today, he was just imperious and Graziano (apart from being shoved, tripped and having his shirt pulled most of the game) was just great. And don't start me on Dusan ......... I might write a book ........... Lallana? Who?
Well I saw the match too. Their general play was fine for the first half hour. In fact, they were the better team for the first 10-20 minutes. They shot themselves in the foot by making detailed errors and got punished. By HT it was definitely all over. They could have tried to keep the score down but their heads went down. To say that they were horrible throughout is to over simplify, but go ahead and join the pundits. Or download the 90 minutes when the appear later this evening and see at your leisure.
Couldn't be a penalty - ball was out before he hit the ground. Just a collision with our keeper with the ball going wide ...........
Yeah, I'd go along with this assessment. Saints certainly didn't play an 8-0 performance [whoever does really..?]. It was a very competent and professional performance. We were very cut throat and Sunderland were profligate with the few chances they had. I wouldn't have felt cheated with 3-0 or 3-1 after that game, but we seemed to score at almost every opportunity. We can't be unhappy about that.
Still pinching myself! Unbelievable. Couldn't have happened to a nicer manager. That first own goal was priceless. Tadic was sensational today. How many assists did he get? Feel desperately sorry for the Sunderland fans who travelled though.
Not bad, not bad at all. Although in fairness to Sunderland, our results against them and Newcastle this season should really be swapped around. They were nowhere near as bad as Newcastle, and the only reason why things jumped from 4-0 to 8-0 seemed to be that Sunderland jacked in the towel. Newcastle started their match against us without a towel to even jack in.
Just hearing the start of BBC 606 and Savage doesn't mention Southampton in the 8-0, but immediately concentrates on Sunderland's performance. Guess we're not going to get the benefit of the doubt yet again.
I agree with this, but you have to admit it makes up for the innumerable times in the last few years we have been in total command of a game but couldn't score, or gave away stupid goals to lose or draw games we should have won. One of the things that impressed me most about us today was the 100% effort that we put in. Right up to the 94th minute we were chasing down the ball, not letting Sunderland have any respite whatsoever. A thoroughly clinical and professional performance.
The touch on the player occurred after he'd played it, but the advantage was already gained. You can argue Fletcher took a bad touch because Forster put him under pressure by flying in on him in such a way that contact was made. Had Forster not tackled so aggressively, there might have been a goal. OTOH, Fletcher ran into the tackle to some extent because he was flying in toward the goal somewhat recklessly himself. If Forster had waited a split second or not gone down the instead of him taking out Fletcher's legs, Fletcher would have likely bowled him over. He might have put the ball in, but he wasn't going to get his body around Forster. I hate penalty box fouls. If I could magically create my own rules of football justice that would have been a direct free kick and a yellow. But given the actual rules of football I have to say Sunderland had a pretty good case for a red and a PK. It would have been extremely harsh on Saints but them's the rules. OTOH, just the goal kick was harsh on Sunderland because that probably was a foul.
It wasn't a penalty for Sunderland. The ball was going out for a goal kick when contact was made. Poyet's antics on the touchline made me chuckle though.
Does anyone even a little bit wouldn't mind QPR doing Liverpool over Would be great to be 6 points clear after 8 games played...
I need to see the penalty incident again as it looked more like Fletcher running into Forster than Forster jumping into Fletcher for me. Certainly not a red as the ball was never going into the net.
