www.safc.com/news/team-news/2014/october/jos-signs-new-deal? Two more years for influential captain. Captain John OâShea has penned a new two-year extension at the Stadium of Light. OâShea, 33, is now contracted to the club until 2017 and has made more than 120 appearances in red and white since joining the club from Manchester United in 2011. The defender won his 100th cap for the Republic of Ireland earlier this week, marking the occasion by scoring against world champions Germany. He made his international debut in 2001. Head coach Gus Poyet told safc.com: âI am delighted that John has agreed to stay with us for at least another two years. âHe is our captain, one of our leaders and I am sure he will continue to help us get better and stronger as a team. I really look forward to continuing to work with John.â OâShea has collected 15 major club honours during his career, including five Barclays Premier League titles, an FA Cup winnersâ medal and a UEFA Champions League success.
the only reason I can see us giving him two years instead of one is that he's earmarked for a coaching role.
Good,we need experienced heads at the spine of the club,he gets a lot of stick but when you look around the prem he is still better than most, also when we start bringing in less experienced cb's he will be there to guide them, just need wickham to sign on the dotted line.
Or earmarked to be Club Captain as opposed to Team Captain mate...like Bally was after his playing days. Good idea imo !
Good Character to have around even if his playing days are coming to an end. 12 months ago I wouldn't have been so sure, but now we've clearly got a structure of discipline about the club I think it's a good thing.
My thoughts exactly. Having a coach with his pedigree would be a great move in putting the club on solid foundations.
Like the idea of the coaching role. Less chuffed at the prospect of watching him get even slower for another couple of years.
Well, I'm gonna have to be true to myself and say I'm mortified that anyone thinks he has 2 more years in him! That said, if it is with a view to coaching and being back up to new signings then ok. Surely, surely we can't have renewed him at his supposed 45k per week?
ffs, one goal and he's git good// this has to be be last year...i can run faster after a dozen beers..
Must have mate, nobody in their right mind would equal or better his current deal. He's winding down now and has nothing but experience to offer beyond this season.
The only slight concern I have with this is how is it going to affect Vergini's decision next summer? I know Altidore got some stick for it this week, but all international players are concerned about keeping their place for their country. Vergini is not coming here to sit on the bench, for sure.
Fair enough like. The lads always shows leadership so I have no objection whatsoever to him moving into coaching at the club.
All for this, if as others have said he's taken a fairly hefty paycut. If he's still on more than £30k / week this a cock up.
Question... Why are we sorting JOS's contract out but not Wickhams...? Questions for one Maggie Byrne I believe...
Know what you're saying mate but we have had so many squad re-inventions in recent times at great expense and think a few quid for some stability might save us money in the long run.
I suspect some people, on here, are basing their views on more than one minute of one match My opinion has changed over the past year, when I've been to many games and seen, first hand, the effect he has on the team. Someone watching 10 minutes, on MOTD, is excused from formulating a jaundiced opinion.
