Some of the names in the NE are so blunt and industrial it truly reflects the people and the area. Stony Heap, Wide Open, Number One, Metal Bridge, etc ......... no mucking about with fancy flowery ****e, straight to the point
Mentioned on another thread years ago, about returning home from holidays as kids in the old mans car and reaching Pity Me roundabout, we knew we nearly home. Just did a quick search to see if this was still misinforming people and it is. http://wikimapia.org/13197625/Pity-Me-Roundabout Nearest Cities, Darlington, Newcastle and Leeds
Near New Kyo isn't it? Quaking Houses was founded by Quakers if my dad was right .......... dunno like, seems a bit far fetched.
Opposite side mate. Down South Moor bank & up the hill. Kyo's just before you get into Anfield Plain.
My memory's vague on this one but I reckon West Kyo is referred to as Old Kyo by the locals. I'll have a look and see if I can find owt, it's got me interested now Edit: Just found it, an old NE word for cow ....... the Kyo area was good pasture land. I saw the Unthanks performing 'Gan to the Kye' in Dublin, had to look up the words then.
I was born at Shotley Bridge hospital which, at one time, was regarded as a workers production line for the pits & iron company I lived at Allendale Cottages, which was pulled down when the pits closed, and we were packed off to Mansfield. It was between Medomsley and High Westwood and it still appears on Google maps. I go and stand on the hillside, when we're up for the matches, a couple of times a year. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...2!3m1!1s0x487dd6c768d7d02b:0x46646471fcb1fedf
Billy, Smug is right we called West Kyo, Old Kyo. It is down the bank from Catchgate just before you get to Harperley, the back way to Tantobie, Tanfield Lea and White-le-head, the pub is called the Earl Grey, it used to be a brilliant steakhouse and lock in.
I was born at the Richard Murray which has long since gone. I know where you mean though. That's my neck of the woods marra. Not even sure if the Grey is still open, last time I was in there it was full of the bad lads. Bob Bells has reopened & seems to be doing ok. The Plainsman is nomore, got burnt down & is now just a pile of rubble. Smiths Arms has gone as well. Coach & Horses is up for sale. In Tantobie, the Oak Tree is doing ok but the Commie is only open on a night time. The town centre is ****e &looks like Beirut.
I think I have mentioned it to you before, but my local was the Kings Head at East Stanley, its a sex hotel now.
Back to the OP, I live about 10 miles from Pratt's Bottom and there's a street in Caterham called White Knobs Way. Very silly...
