Lord Mayor Mary Glew will open the fair at 5.00pm tonight(when did they sack off Jim Bowen?), is anyone on here going, or we all too old?

I haven't been for over 20 years having been away for a large part of that time, I may go and have a walk round for old times sake.

I've not been back since I saw a goldfish in a bag go flying through the air when I was 9. Totally traumatised.

    It's for the young'uns I think.

Interestingly - well mildly - there are posters all over Leeds advertising it this year. I've lived here 15 years and never seen that before.

Must be 15 years since Iv been . Doubt if I will go again . Must cost those with a young family a bloody fortune. Best event this weekend is Pickering 1940's / ww2 weekend well worth a trip out and free .

I'm being dragged there tonight. Dunno why anyone over the age of 10 would want to go willingly

Just had a browse, looks good. Can you just rock up to it or is it solely for the weekend campers?

As the father of a 4 and a 5 year old I'll be going at some point.

I do always find it fascinating how blasé the people of Hull are to what is in essence Blackpool pleasure beach rocking up for a week every year.

Just roll up. Though it is packed. There are also displays at the other stations along the line. Give me steam engines over Hull Fair anytime.
Worth looking at Grosmont as well. Meaningless to Grandson that Heartbeat was filmed there but being told the police car he was stood next to was the one used in Harry Potter perked his interest up.

I enjoy a walk round and like the sensations of the lights, the smells and the sounds. I think the engineering and logistics is quite impressive too.

It does make me laugh that something that's been designed and tested to the nth degree by health and safety bods generates excited fear, yet the ride there and back's probably faster and certainly less controlled.

With a hippy hat on, I struggle with the engineering and expense of these things, when so much of the world is struggling to have basic facilities.

Have you been to Blackpool recently?

Because Hull Fair is certainly not in essence Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

I usually go for a walk round, haven't been on a ride there in years. I always make a point of buying things like brandy snap which in my head are traditional hull fair foods but which in this day and age I'm sure I could easily get elsewhere without too much effort.

It's full of ****s though. You'd think it'd be all kids, but on a night its all irritating 14 year olds.

I remember my dad making brandy snaps at home as a kid. The power went off. The pan had to be thrown out.

    Dark days.

    I have.
Did I say it literally rocks up is a better question.

Hate it! Apart from people taking there children, most of the clientele look a mixture of the Gypo's that run it and a weird John Merrick/Simon Weston combo lovechild!
