Oh yes, it's that time of year again!

The catalogue for the premier yearling sale in Europe has been published online and can be viewed here.

I've not had a chance to look through it myself yet, plus have other things in my mind!

Below is the press release put out by Tattersalls:

"The catalogue for Book 1 of the 2014 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which takes place Tuesday 7th October - Thursday 9th October, is now online and can be viewed at www.tattersalls.com. The catalogue for Europe's premier yearling sale numbers 471 lots, all of which are eligible for the 2015/2016 Tattersalls Millions which comprises five races worth £1,300,000, and all eyes will be on the 29 yearlings by the champion sire GALILEO.

The flagship Tattersalls sale has attracted a truly outstanding collection of the finest yearlings to be found anywhere in the world, including own or half brothers and sisters to 42 Group 1 and Classic winners and more than 232 Group/Listed winners. Amongst the siblings to Classic and Group 1 winners are half brothers to British, Irish and French Classic winners ATTRACTION, ELUSIVE WAVE, LATICE, LAWMAN, LEADING LIGHT and POWER, as well as half sisters to BLUE BUNTING, DANCING RAIN, MOTIVATOR, POUR MOI and SPECIOSA. Also amongst the half brothers and sisters to Group 1 winners are half brothers to top 2014 performers GALLANTE, INTEGRAL and PRINCE BISHOP and the half sister to the outstanding sprinter SOLE POWER.

Twenty six Group 1 and Classic winning mares also have yearlings catalogued including proven Group and Listed producers ATTRACTION, CHORIST, ECHELON, ELLE DANZIG, FIELD OF HOPE, KINNAIRD, PEARLY SHELLS, REBELLINE, ZANZIBAR and ZEE ZEE TOP.

All of the current top 20 active sires standing in Britain and Ireland are well represented with the two phenomenal half brothers GALILEO and SEA THE STARS leading the way with 64 yearlings catalogued between them. SEA THE STARS, who currently boasts the highest rated three year old colt and filly in Europe, has 35 yearlings catalogued, while his superstar older half brother has 29. Next in line amongst the top 20 active sires are NEW APPROACH with 28, OASIS DREAM with 25, ACCLAMATION with 19, IFFRAAJ with 18, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT with 17, PIVOTAL and EXCEED AND EXCEL with 16 apiece, SHAMARDAL with 15 and DUBAWI with 13. In total the top 20 active sires have more than 300 yearlings catalogued between them with the current top 10 accounting for a massive 185 yearlings. The much missed MONTJEU also leaves a legacy of four colts and two fillies from his last crop.

The nine first crop yearling sires represented are all Classic or Group 1 winners with 10 yearlings by Champion Sprinter DREAM AHEAD, eight by POET’S VOICE and Derby winner POUR MOI and seven by Champion miler CANFORD CLIFFS.

Overseas based sires traditionally play a prominent role at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale and ARCH, ELUSIVE QUALITY, ESKENDEREYA, EXCHANGE RATE, GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, HAT TRICK, KITTEN’S JOY, LEMON DROP KID, MONSUN, MOTIVATOR, SPEIGHTSTOWN, STORMY ATLANTIC, STREET CRY and WAR FRONT give the catalogue its customary international appeal.

As last year the largest consignments from Britain and Ireland come from Highclere Stud and The Castlebridge Consignment with 35 and 30 yearlings respectively. Lodge Park Stud, which sold last year’s 5 million guineas sale topper, has an elite band of three colts by GALILEO, NEW APPROACH and DREAM AHEAD and a filly by SEA THE STARS, while Newsells Park Stud which filled the runner up spot, has an impressive draft of 19 yearlings comprising 11 colts and eight fillies.

Commenting on the catalogue for Book 1 of the 2014 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“This is a truly outstanding catalogue, as befits Europe’s premier yearling sale. Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale is the only yearling sale in the world to produce a 2014 British or Irish Classic winner and the likes of Derby winner AUSTRALIA and 32,000 guineas 2000 Guineas winner NIGHT OF THUNDER show why this particular sale is the primary target for so many of the world’s leading owners. There have been three October Book 1 Guineas winners bought for 50,000 guineas or less since 2012, which underlines the extraordinary quality to be found at all levels of the sale, and this year’s catalogue has all the ingredients to appeal to a wide cross section of international buyers. Not only is Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale the world’s number one source of European Classic winners, it also boasts the only contenders for the five Tattersalls Millions races which are worth £1,300,000 between them.”

The catalogue for Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale is online now and will be available from Tattersalls and Tattersalls representatives from Monday, 18th August."

I should think Sea the Stars 2013 purchases will look relatively cheap when this lot are sold

A couple of nice looking Kodiac colts in the sale;
87 by Tatora & 208 by Cal Norma's Lady who really should both make nice juveniles. I will be looking to see what they fetch and hopefully track their progress.

My God wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to go to one of these sales with a few hundred grand to burn!

Great write-up for this week's sale from today's TDN:

SCENE SET AT TATTS FOR DRAMATIC BOOK 1
By Emma Berry

As the European bloodstock market braced itself for the three most important days of the yearling season, there was an expectant hush around the sales ring at Tattersalls on the eve of Book1 of the October Sale. In the amphitheatre that last year saw the world record for a yearling filly broken when a 5 million guineas daughter of Galileo (Ire) was sold to Sheikh Joaan Al Thani of Qatar, the smell of new carpet is likely to give way today to the smell of money. More than 70-million guineas was spent during Book 1 last year, and following an ebullient start to the yearling sales season across the Northern Hemisphere, it's easy to believe that sum will have been improved upon by the end of this week.

"You always approach Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale with a degree of cautious optimism and apprehension," said Tattersalls Marketing Director Jimmy George Monday at Park Paddocks, which has played host to a number of the world's major owners and breeders over the weekend as the consignments of yearlings arrived and showing began.

"It kicks off the sales season for us here at Tattersalls, and Book 1 has been fantastic for the last few years," George added. "Last year's sale in particular set the bar very high, but this is a very good catalogue and results on the track have been terrific this year. We've had a Guineas winner, a Derby winner and a St Leger winner from the sale--two from Book 1 and one from Book 2--and that's a tribute to the quality of yearlings on offer in this sale."
"Furthermore, the sire power in Britain and Ireland at the moment is as strong as most of us have known it in our lifetime," he continued. "I think that's recognized by the leading owners in the world and, hopefully, it will be reflected in the likely participants over the coming weeks."

Along with the new carpet, new portraits adorn the wall of the sales ring depicting the aforementioned Tattersalls-sold Classic winners of the season--English and Irish Derby winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), sold for 525,000gns to Coolmore; Night Of Thunder (Ire), a 32,000gns son of Dubawi (Ire) who won the G1 2000 Guineas in May, and Kingston Hill (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), the St Leger winner who was bought from Book 2 for 70,000gns.

Down towards the bottom of the hill in block AA, the same spot in which they were stabled with last year's record-breaker, now named Al Namaah (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the gang from Ireland's Lodge Park Stud are dodging rain showers and doing an equally good job of trying to avoid any pre-sales hype this time around. Al Namaah's dam Alluring Park (Ire) has no yearling this year, but among the four horses consigned by her nursery is her relation, a Galileo (Ire) half-brother to Group 1 winner and young Coolmore stallion Alfred Nobel (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) (lot 312). His 2-year-old half-sister Stellar Glow (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) was still unraced when the catalogue was printed, but has subsequently finished a good second in a Leopardstown maiden. She was later third in the G3 CL and MF Weld Park S. at the Curragh a little over a week ago.

"She looks promising and, hopefully she'll be a Classic filly," says Damian Burns, who runs Lodge Park Stud with his mother, Patricia, and brothers Patrick and Jamie. Another brother, Ronan, runs Herbertstown House Stud, which is selling three yearlings this week. The eldest of the quartet, Damian remained remarkably cool in the wake of last year's memorable result and is similarly unflappable on the eve of this year's sale. He says, "Genuinely, as I said last year, for us it really is all about what happens on the racecourse. Of course good sales results help--they mean we can keep the show on the road and use the stallions we want to use. We also picked up a few nice mares last year, but we really are geared towards the racecourse rather than the sales ring."

Despite the strength of the market, Burns warns that Book 1 is all about being extremely selective in the yearlings offered.
"You have to get everything right--especially at this sale," he said. "There's no room for error. That's the market generally, but particularly at Book 1."

Selective the market may be, but it looks as though it will once again be boosted by a hugely varied and international buying bench. Plenty of Americans have been patrolling the grounds over the last few days, including Alex Solis and Jason Litt, who were in action in Ireland at Goffs last week, as was Marc Keller. They have been joined by Andrew Rosen, Bobby Flay and Jon Kelly, while potential South African buyers include Jehan Malherbe and Mary Slack.
Michael Wallace from China Horse Club spent €850,000 on a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt at Goffs, and augmented that purchase with a hefty spending spree at Arqana's Arc sale on Saturday night, which included an outlay of €800,000 on G2 Prix de Chaudenay winner Auvray (Fr) (Le Havre [Fr}). He and fellow Australians Lee Freedman and Jeff Gordon are also in town, along with members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club buying team and Hong Kong-based trainers Chris So and John Moore's son George. The Japanese bloodstock ranks are represented by potential buyers from Northern Farm and Big Red Farm.

Taking into account various Qatari and Dubaian operations with significant racing and breeding operations in Europe, along with the stalwarts in camp Coolmore, it's fair to expect plenty of high-stakes horse-trading in the small Suffolk town of Newmarket over the next few days. The dress rehearsals have taken place and Tattersalls is ready for curtain up.

Today's lots to watch from TDN

TATTERSALLS OCTOBER YEARLING SALE BOOK 1 TUESDAY

Lot 2, f, Fastnet Rock (Aus)--Rain Flower (Ire), by Indian Ridge (GB) Consigned by Camas Park Stud
From a family that is known to cause a stir in the Tattersalls ring, this filly could get proceedings off to a fast start. The January foal is a three- quarter sister to G1 Investec Oaks and G1 German Oaks winner Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who caused so much commotion when selling for 4 million guineas at Tattersalls’ Mare Sale in December. Another of her sisters, the stakes-winning Sumora (Ire) (Danehill), is the dam of G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and was a 2.4 million guineas buy at the December Sale in 2011.

Lot 75, f, Street Cry (Ire)--Strawberrydaiquiri (GB), by Dansili (GB) Consigned by Aislabie Stud
A member of the third to final crop of the recently deceased Street Cry, this is the first foal out of the dual group winner Strawberrydaiquiri, a daughter of multiple stakes winner Strawberry Morn. She is bred on the same cross as Street Cry’s G2 Ribblesdale S. winner Princess Highway (out of a Danehill mare).

Lot 83, c, Galileo (Ire)--Swiss Lake, by Indian Ridge (GB) Consigned by Watership Down Stud
A March foal by the peerless Galileo, this bay is out of the multiple stakes-winning Swiss Lake, who has produced five winners from six to race, including Group 3 winners Swiss Diva (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Swiss Spirit (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), and listed winner Swiss Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). He is bred on the same cross as New Approach (out of a mare by Ahonoora, by Indian Ridge), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Nightime (Ire) and multiple group winner David Livingston (Ire).

Lot 97, c, Oasis Dream (GB)--Titivation (GB), by Montjeu (Ire) Consigned by Floors Stud
This strapping bay is the second foal out of the winning Titivation, a half-sister to the dual Classic winner and five-time Group 1 winner Attraction (GB) (Efisio) (GB). He is therefore closely related to Attraction’s Group 3-winning colt Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Lot 107, f, Dansili (GB)--Tyranny (GB), by Machiavellian Consigned by Croom House Stud
Despite being a late May foal, this bay filly should attract plenty of attention on pedigree alone. She is a full-sister to G1 Phoenix S. winner and young sire Zoffany (Ire) and a three-quarter to multiple group winner and Group 1-placed Wilshire Boulevard. Tyranny’s unraced 2-year-old Galileo filly was a 600,000 buy back in this ring last year.

Lot 142, c, Oasis Dream (GB)--Zee Zee Top (GB), by Zafonic Consigned by Meon Valley Stud
Out of the G1 Prix de l’Opera winner Zee Zee Top, this February foal is a half to dual Group 1 winner Izzi Top (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). His second dam is G1 Irish Oaks winner Colorspin (Fr), who has produced multiple Group 1 winners Kayf Tara (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) and Opera House (GB) (Sadler’s Wells). Colorspin is also the second dam of 2003 Irish champion 2-year-old filly Necklace (GB) (Darshaan {GB}).

Lot 144, f, High Chaparral (Ire)--Agnetha (Ger), by Big Shuffle Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment
High Chaparral, who has enjoyed a strong run as of late with Group 1 winners Toronado (Ire) and Lucky Lion (GB) to his credit this year, plus a pair of winners at Longchamp over the weekend in High Jinx (GB) (G1 Prix du Cadran) and Frine (Ire) (G2 Prix Royallieu), is the sire of this bay filly, who has attracted a lot of attention at the barn. A daughter of the Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Agnetha, she is a three-quarter sister to Grade III winner Starstruck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and bred on the same cross as Lucky Lion.

Lot 154, f, Galileo (Ire)--Aleagueoftheirown (Ire), by Danehill Dancer (Ire) Consigned by Glenvale Stud
The stakes-placed Aleagueoftheirown has thus far produced two stakes-placed winners by Galileo. One of those, Criteria (Ire), was purchased by Cheveley Park Stud for 535,000gns in this ring in 2012.

Lot 157, c, Sea the Stars (Ire)--Alizaya (Ire), by Highest Honor (Fr) Consigned by The Castlebridge Consignment
The last lot catalogued for session one, this April foal could bring the day to a close on a high note. By the much sought-after Sea the Stars, he is out of an unraced mare who has produced two winners from two to run.

Write up from Racing Post

Oasis Dream colt heads solid Book 1 opener

BY KATHERINE FIDLER 6:23PM 7 OCT 2014

SOLID trade was order of the day during the opening session of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on Tuesday, with the absence of any blockbuster prices compensated for by a record opening day median.

A son of Oasis Dream from the Duke of Roxburghe's Floors Stud topped trade when selling to Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser John Ferguson for 775,000gns - some way short of the 3.6 million guineas top lot on the corresponding session last year, but contributing to a median of 140,000gns, up from 117,500gns in 2013.

The January-born colt is the second foal out of Titivation, a Montjeu half-sister to the duke's dual 1,000 Guineas winner Attraction. Her first produce, the Danehill Dancer colt St Saviour, was bought by John Warren in the same sales ring at Book 1 last year for 135,000gns and holds a Derby entry.

The six-figure sum represented a record price for the duke, breaking the high-water mark set when a Montjeu colt out of Attraction sold for 450,000gns 12 months ago.

"He was always going the right way," said the Duke of Roxburghe after the sale. "He's a lovely horse and did everything right all through this year and last. He took his sales prep really well and he's been a real gentleman. "I'm delighted he's gone to Sheikh Mohammed."

Titivation has a Makfi filly foal and is in foal to Declaration Of War.

A Dansili sister to Phoenix Stakes winner Zoffany - who memorably ran Frankel to just three-quarters of a length in the St James's Palace Stakes - fetched 700,000gns from US agents Alex Solis and Jason Litt, who were making their first trip to the sale.

"She's for an existing American client," said Litt. "We're not sure yet where she will be trained.

"We were after a good filly and we think we've found her. Dansili has done well in Europe and the US and she's a sister to Zoffany, whose yearlings are being well received, so we think she's a good package."

The filly, consigned by Croom House Stud, is a daughter of the winning Machiavellian mare Tyranny, who is also the dam of Anglesey Stakes winner Wilshire Boulevard.

Oasis Dream, sire of five top ten lots, was responsible for Meon Valley's colt out of Prix de l'Opera heroine Zee Zee Top, a descendant of the stud's foundation mare Reprocolor, The colt, a half-brother to Group 1 winner Izzi Top, was knocked down to John Ferguson for 625,000gns.

Ferguson also bought one of two colts to hit the 600,000gns mark, a son of New Approach out of Listed winner Ahla Wasahl consigned by Genesis Green Stud. Ahla Wasahl, by Dubai Destination, is a half-sister to the dam of Oaks d'Italia winner Menhoubah.

He was also underbidder on the second 600,000gns colt, a son of Sea The Stars set for the yard of Sir Michael Stoute after selling to Charlie Gordon-Watson.

At the close of play 107 out of 144 lots offered changed hands for a clearance rate of 74 per cent and an aggregate of 20,185,000gns, a decrease of 23 per cent compared to 2013 - with 14 per cent fewer horses sold. The average of 188,645gns also dropped 11 per cent.

Certainly is Oddy..especially when the owners you work for are utterly vacuous.

Having said that,he ends up training a lot of what he buys over timber.

Their combined success is staggeringly poor considering the cash they invest and the enormous number of horses they process.

Well matched.

Once the Qatari's start breeding on a scale akin to the other dictators who embrace the sport the market will naturally fall.

Their trips to the sales will obviously be less and a more in house operation will evole. They do however still have a buying horses in training agenda as always and this will no doubt aid the future breeding op.

The same happened when Robert Sangster developed his breeding regime and Sheikh Mo after that.

Bloodstock sales dropped considerably.

Listened in on the link and to me it seemed a bit flat, so wasn't surprised to see the figures are down. Some stallion prices seem too high now and maybe a correction is necessary.

Three lots made over 1,000,000 guineas today. Summary from Tattersalls:

Records Smashed on Second Day of Tattersalls October 2
8th October 2014Send this to a friend

There were records galore on the second day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale with the SHAMARDAL half-brother to HALFWAY TO HEAVEN selling for the highest price for a yearling in the world this year when knocked down for 1,700,000 guineas and the turnover, average and median all setting record benchmarks for a single day at a European yearling sale. A total of 123 lots were sold for 28,930,000 guineas at an average of 235,203 guineas and a median of 150,000 guineas. The clearance for the day was 87%.

Catalogued as lot 214, the colt by SHAMARDAL out of the King’s Stand Stakes winner CASSANDRA GO saw a rare head to head battle between two of racings superpowers, Sheikh Mohammed and Coolmore’s John Magnier. John Ferguson, standing alongside Sheikh Mohammed and Magnier traded 100,000 guinea bids that stopped only when Magnier declined to answer Ferguson’s bid of 1,700,000 guineas. The price represents the highest price for a yearling anywhere in the world in 2014.

"I can sleep well tonight!" joked Trevor Stewart, breeder of the colt sold through James Hanly’s Ballyhimikin Stud.

"It's easy to sell the good ones, but it is a wonderful price, I hope he goes on to be a star.

"Cassandra Go is at Ballyhimikin and in-foal to Iffraaj, I have her two-year-old by Pivotal in training with Roger Charlton. Cassandra Go's daughter Tickled Pink is carrying to Dark Angel," added Stewart.

Ferguson, who was delighted with his purchase, commented;

"This colt is from a top breeder and out of a top racemare, who has gone on to produce a Classic winner - there is always the chance that she might do it again. He is also by stallion, who has enjoyed an outstanding year.

"Yes, it is a lot of money, but it is so difficult to breed something so special as this colt, he deserves to make a good price."

Whilst he might not have been represented by the sale topper, the second day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 belonged to fellow Darley inmate DUBAWI who was represented by four of the top seven yearlings on the day including two to sell for 1 million guineas or more. The top priced of those was lot 245, the colt out of CRYSTAL MUSIC consigned by Watership Down Stud. Despite determined efforts from plethora of agents including Badgers Bloodstock, Form Bloodtock’s Jehan Malherbe, and John Warren and Charlie Gordon-Watson, the colt was knocked down to John Ferguson for 1,600,000 guineas.

"We are trying to find the gold mine," said Ferguson, "the horse who will become a dual-hemisphere stallion. And this is just one spike of a broad investment made throughout the year.

"The very best yearlings are found at Newmarket this week, we currently have fabulous stallions in Europe and wonderful horses are being bred. And I don't know whether it has been due to the weather, but this year's crop of yearlings seem to be exceptional," added Ferguson.

Simon Marsh, manager of vendor Watership Down Stud, and Madeline LLoyd-Webber, owner of the farm, were all smiles, particularly as the colt is a grand-son of the stud's foundation mare, Crystal Spray.

"We were very lucky to have bought Crystal Spray for 500,000gns in 1995," said Marsh. "It is a massive operation to get the horses here for the day, and we have wonderful staff to thank."

Madeline Lloyd-Webber added: "We are so proud, and although we have sold for more in this ring, to get a million guineas colt is a very hard thing to do."

Crystal Music has a foal at foot by Dubawi and was covered by Frankel this spring.

The other DUBAWI to reach seven figures for the day was lot 237, the DUBAWI colt out of the BE MY CHIEF mare COMIC. Consigned by the Duke of Roxburghe’s Floors Stud, the half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner VIVA PATACA and dual US Grade 1 winner LAUGHING was knocked down to John Ferguson for 1,400,000 guineas after he saw off John Warren.

"I am over the moon," said the Duke after selling the Dubawi colt for the best price ever achieved in the sale ring by the farm.

"I just have to thank my staff, and I am so pleased for them. They do all the hard work and they do a fabulous job all the time.

"Comic is 19 now, and back in-foal to Dubawi, but I guess they are not many dual Group / Grade 1 producers in the catalogue. She is owned in partnership with the Duke Of Devonshire.

"It is more than I had thought he would make, and it is right up with winning a Classic - and that was ten years' ago! I really am blown away."

It has been a remarkable two days for Floors Stud whose only three yearlings realised a total of 2,925,000 guineas.

Earlier in the day Michael Wallace, buying on behalf of the China Horse Club signed for lot 170, the GALILEO colt out of the GONE WEST mare ANOTHER STORM. Consigned by Clare Castle Stud, the half-brother to three Group/Listed winners caught the attention of Badgers Bloodstock, Ross Doyle and underbidder Charlie Gordon-Watson, but none were able to match New Zealander Wallace who signed for the colt at 875,000 guineas.

"He is by a champion sire and a mare who is doing her job," said Wallace. "His full-brother [Order Of St George] won his maiden by 9l and is going for a Group 1 next.

"We've had great success with Australia this year and are building on that. We have not decided on a trainer for this horse yet.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 continues at 11am on Thursday, October 9.
