What do these songs have in common? Answer Me â Frankie Laine (1953) Cradle Song (Brahms' Lullaby) â Frank Sinatra (1944) St. Therese of the Roses â Malcolm Vaughan (1956)
My old man is a big Frankie Laine fan & always used to tell us that Answer Me was banned off radiogram long before Frankie Goes to Hollywood came along. So I'm off for them all been banned/censored off the telly or wireless.
Spot on, well done. All banned by the BBC. It astonished me how many there were. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_banned_by_the_BBC
Some the BBC missed...
That's a mad list, there's loads on there I remember my old fella playing when I was a kid. He must of been a bit of a rebel, haha
Answer Me was banned because the original was "Answer me my Lord" and no religious references were allowed. It was re-recorded as "Answer me my love". First record to be replaced at number one by another version of the same song and the only one where two versions of the same song were at joint number one. A lot of people in Hull don't realise what a big star David Whitfield was in his time. In many ways Hull's biggest. You can maybe see why this was banned at the time-
Heard this in a Nottingham shebeen in the mid-60s:
Under "D",there should be 'Down in the tube station at midnight' by The Jam. Which incidentally,is the finest tune ever penned....
It's a shame that decent male dancers don't like girls then isn't it. Apart from me obviously. I'm bloody ace I am.
I was also a big fan of Frankie Laine and started collecting his 78's from 1949(Mule Train) to 1956(Moonlight Gambler).Mule Train was one of his 3 US number 1's in 49/50 but perhaps his biggest hit was 'I Believe' which reached No2 in the US and No1 in the UK. This was also recorded in the UK by David Whitfield without chart success. 'Answer Me' by Frankie L. with 'Lord' was first banned in the US and then followed by a ban by the BBC. Although reaching No1 in the UK it did not reach the top 20 in the USA. I was also a big fan of David Whitfield but that story has been aired on here a couple of times in the past.
