I just have no idea has this wasn't seen as a priority a month ago. Everybody saw the gaping hole in our squad.
In January, some teams will be out of the CL. Surely there will be some teams with good defenders who will be out of the CL by then.
I think we need to make Dortmund and Hummels an offer they can't refuse. There really isn't many other top centre halfs that I could see us getting
Omar Gonzalez of the LA Galaxy. Either on a loan for the rest of the season,or on a permanent basis. He's probably not good enough to be a starting CB for where we want to be as a team, but he's definitely better than what we have currently. Wouldn't cost much, would bring in revenue from the States. He's a very dedicated player, and while we should definitely being bringing in top class CBs, most won't be willing to leave their clubs until summer I'd imagine. Obviously I'm a little biased.
If he does sign a centre half he'd be better off getting someone already playing in the PL so there is no adjustment period. Vlaar seems most likely. Ashley Williams would be a decent shout as well, good player. £300k per week should do the job.
That is why the figures can lie. We all know that Chelsea have got better defenders. And that united's ones are vulnerable. Of course it is ateam game and LVG is right to say that the whole team must take responsibility for throwing away a win at Leicester. But can you imagine Vidic or Rio letting in 4 goals after being 3-1 up? That scoreline can sometimes be excused if United had been chasing the game during the whole match. United's had always had good defemders: from Martin Buchan, Gordon McQueen - Bruce and pallister through to Vidic and Ferdinand. We need to get the new generation sorted: I just do not think that Smalling and Jones are the ones. Blackett may have potential but he is raw and the way he was shoved off the ball was pathetic. I can't imagine RIio/Vidic being done like that. Rafael is just an impetious litlle ****er who ought to have learnt his lesson by now.
Vlaar is the best shout. We could either get him for next to nothing in jan or get him on a free in the summer.
It doesn't matter who you sign if you insist on playing so many attack minded players in the same team with very little cover from midfield. Personnel is only half the problem. Better players make less mistakes but your defence was horribly exposed at times yesterday. A manager with a reputation less than LVG would be getting some serious questions asked of him.
Sure. But would they know what questions to ask? If the journos are not clever enough then they'll be made to look like stupid c**ts by LVG. Of course he knows what he is doing. Quite confident he'll address them or else he'll be out. I hope the GGs will give him time.
I think he'll get it right in the long run but by managing Holland right to the end of the world cup perhaps meant he had less time to evaluate the weaknesses in the squad before the end of the window. A good pre season may have also distorted his perception of the squad given his lack of P.L experience.
But the figures don`t lie. In the first 4 games we let in 3 goals, chelsea let in 6 so they are letting goals in on a more consistant basis than us, we just had a bad game where we shipped a lot of goals, we still lost the same number of points as any other team that lose the game though.
We played equally attack minded players during our most successful periods when we had the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez or Saha, Scholes, Nani on the pitch week in week out. I don't see that as a problem at all. Although Chelsea fans (as you're the second to keep raising this on here) seem to have bought the Mourinho philosophy that you can only choose between attacking flair or good defences, but the truth is you can have both. It's like ppl who seem to argue about entertaining football or good results - like somehow you can't have both, ofcourse you can. Our problems in defence are exactly that, problems with our defence. It is a serious problem though and any chance of developing that fear factor again has been knocked. Teams will fear our attacking threat, but will feel they can take advantage of our defence and get a result.
I see what you're saying but the defence you had from memory was VDS in goal, Neville, Vidic, Rio and Evra. All arguably world class in their position, all used to playing together etc and a bloody solid back line to allow the forward thinkers to do their thing. Even if you brought in 2-3 top class defenders, it'll take time for them to get used to playing with each other etc and therefore until the defence is ready, LVG should probably be playing a system and players to add protection to the back line or face the prospect of more games like the weekend. But as Matth say, he knows what he's doing.
