I know it can't be compared to a lot of posts on here, but we saw some great stuff in the Old 29 before kick-off. And some right ****e as well! Great times!
Snoop Dogg and The Who at Live 8. Elton John in Gangeliq Stadium, Baku. All the lads and lasses who went paid £5 / ticket equivalent in local money. We all thought it was a wind up, but he decking hammered that piano for nearly two hours solid. Class Would hav lev to seen The Doors but just not old enough! FTM
I will probably get stick however I was dragged screaming and kicking to a Corrs concert (on 2 occasions) and they were bloody brilliant for shear enjoying themselves, no surliness, being friendly, sharing the "in band" jokes with the crowd, talking to the audience, tightness of the band and they are second to none for shaggability! Pink Floyd were pretty good at Earls Court in 81 (The Wall), Stones at Wembley and Sid James Park, Queen the same...all good gigs.
Sabbath at the city hall late 70's. Had waited a while to see them so Snow Blind n War Pigs that night, yup I enjoyed it. Local gigs would probably be The Force
FREE ! Early 1970s at the Locarno. Was only 15 too young to realise how immense they were at the time. Just knew I loved the clear and understandable singing, with some of the best guitar and drum playing I have ever heard. Not being in any way musically inclined that is the best way I can describe just how good they were. "The Hunter" and "All right now." that I was listening to were used as live tracks on Free Live! If I remember rightly we chanted for "All right now" and they played it again later in the set. Don't forget this was before "All right now" charted, showed we had good taste in Sunderland even then. For the younger posters you should check them out you may may surprised how well their music stands the test of time. Three of my favs.
Deep Purple with and without Blackmore seen them several times - a fantastic band live. Unfortunately I missed out on seeing the Mark 2 line up. Runner up would be led Zeppelin at Knebworth Aug 4th 1979. An absolutely fantastic day will never forget it.
Would have loved to have seen Free live - one of my favourite bands. I met Paul Kossoff's dad at one of his talks about his son's life. The talk was absolutely fantastic had tears in my eyes at the end. Paul Kossoff was an excellent guitarist. Have seen Bad Co live but they are not a patch on Free.
When Kossof was cabbaging himself with the drugs the Sunderland bloke who was doing the promoting kidnapped him from London and kept him in his flat in the City centre trying to get him sorted out. I met a lass about a year or so later told me she had been chatted up by Kossof in Annabels, but he got whisked away by a tough looking guy.
Once they got their hooks in him it was impossible to keep the drug pushers away. A very sad loss and not the only talent to be lost to drugs unfortunately. Absolute scum of the Earth drug pushers.
conflict- at the bunker, sunderland stiff little fingers- Newcastle ramones - mayfair , Newcastle pogues - mayfair again system - townsman , blackpool gigs that stand out
I seen Free at the Mecca...that night if I can remember correctly Kossof was 'out' on his feet....still great night tho....went to Northlea...where did you live?
