CHARIS Mavrias is continuing his push for first-team inclusion, with Sunderland not contemplating a loan exit for the sparsely-used Greek winger. Mavrias was one
of the stand-out performers of the Black Catsâ pre-season programme, despite predominantly being used as a makeshift full-back. But Mavrias is yet to make a Premier League appearance under Gus Poyet and hasnât even been included on the bench for Sunderlandâs last three games. The 20-year-old, who could be involved in Tuesdayâs Capital One Cup clash against Stoke, has caught Poyetâs eye on the training ground though, with the head coach prepared to eventually hand him an opportunity. Poyet told the Gazette: âHarry trains 100 per cent, every single day. âHeâs a great example. Heâs not in the team, but heâs there. âHe knows he needs to be fit and be ready for any chances or anything that happens. âIf the rest are the same, weâve got an incredible situation; the quality of training, the atmosphere, the belief. âAnd yes theyâll get upset because they are not playing, but we want that as well.â Mavrias has started just two games for Sunderland since arriving in a £2m deal from Panathinaikos last summer. But despite that minimal amount of competitive football during his maiden campaign at the Stadium of Light, Poyet is not looking to send the Greek international out on loan. There was interest in Mavrias last season â thought to have included a potential return to Panathinaikos â but Poyet will leave those enquiries in the hands of sporting director Lee Congerton. âWe had one or two enquiries last year,â said Poyet. âBut at the moment... âI try not to be constantly informed about any calls or any approaches. âLast year, there was a moment when we had six or seven for Danny (Graham) so you try not to get involved for that reason. âI prefer Lee Congerton to deal with that. âAnd if something really strong comes in, then weâll call the player and talk to him. âItâs not like in the old days â and Iâm only talking about three or four years ago â when a manager would talk to another manager about a player. âI think thatâs going away now, maybe because of too many foreigners. âBut me, Iâm a bit old-fashioned in that. âI would like the situation to be explained clearly because then we show a bit of respect for each other.â The two players Sunderland are proactively looking to loan out, Graham and Cabral, remain in training at the Stadium of Light, with the Black Cats yet to receive any concrete interest in the out-of-favour duo. âNo (theyâre not close to leaving),â added Poyet. âTheyâre training well and theyâre being professionals. âThereâs no complaints when they have to run a bit extra. Theyâve been spot-on.â
I would like to see Mavrias get a chance on the RW against Stoke. He was unlucky to have to keep playing at RB in pre-season - he's not exactly a natural defender.
With johnson buckley giaccherini and Alvarez available for our two wing positions I think a short term loan would be a win win.
Yeah, he's got that something, he's quick with tight control and loves to run, he needs a lot of gym work for sure, but he's so direct and nowadays people aren't ready for that. Hopefully we see him in a few cup games and gradually introduce him to the bench this season, a loan to a good club, like Wednesday or Derby would do him good, definitely.
He must be gutted though GG. It's been broadly acknowledged he had a good pre-season and he still struggles to even make the bench! I really hope he gets out against Stoke and plays a belter!
