“Southampton have a huge catchment area and it’s a different type of catchment area,” said Pardew, whose Newcastle side travel to Southampton sitting just one place above them in the Premier League.

“There is a big working-class community, but there are a lot of middle-class kids who have a good education. The players who come out of Southampton are quite intelligent and there might be something in that. We have to put more intelligence into our players.

That’s another side of the academy, it’s very important to not just look after the football side of it, but to also bring the right personalities through.

“I’m definitely not going down the line Geordies are thick by the way, I’m trying to make a point that I hope you understand.”

I have never ever heard anything similar said by a manager about his teams fans. Unbeleivable!!! In the name of God GO!!!

I will side with Pardew on this. If you've had a look in books relating to the economics of football, he does have a point. There is a proven correlation between being bright and being good at modern football (it requires fast thinking as well as fast feet), but this is something that hasn't yet caught on in this country! The middle-classes have for far too long been hounded out of football, derided for being bright, yet this cultural narrow-mindedness doesn't exist in other more advanced footballing nations.

Pardew is actually completely correct in what he says here and it's sadly an entirely typically English view that would pull him up on it.

Oh Matth.. you should try harder when you attempt to wum fella.
Appreciate you're as popular across the boards as a bacon sarnie at a Bar mitzvah but that's no excuse for pure laziness.
How's Chelsea doing these days anyway? or it is Liverpool? or Man Utd? <whistle>

Point or no point, pointing it out was akin to throwing a can of petrol onto a fire any thinking there wouldn't be a reaction.
He knows full well some of our lot have an anti 'cockney' viewpoint and s**t like this is just plain antagonistic in my view.
He should just do what he does best and say nothing.

By the way our highest and second highest ever goalscorers were working class and a modest upbringing didn't hinder them did it... no to mention the entire back history of Brazillian footballers....

Burn him good, that's what I say... burn him real damm good......

    Pass me my pitchfork someone....

I hope this is some kind of joke you are making because as an opinion it is absolute garbage and a slur on a country with a glorious history in every field and at every level, your personal experiences are just that, personal

Clearly there is only one way to resolve this and take care of someone making these kind of comments. We must engage the services of Not606's very own version of Ramsay Bolton, JPF, and ask him to inflict Theon Greyjoy type pain on Alan Pardew. The bloke is obviously the anti Christ.

Well the middle classes aren't the only intellectuals, really. I mean, I'm working class, and I battered the **** out of all the toffs and raas in my class at Uni <ok>

If we're just talking the Barca academy here, plenty of their players don't make it, they just use it as a way of giving their kids a back-up career. To be honest though, none of them are picked and taken to the academy for being bright, they're picked for what they can do with their feet.

Technically, actually, footballing ability requires an intelligence that isn't obvious. For example, I once had a lecture in the engineering department of my University, and on the wall was Roberto Carlos' free kick motion (against France), and next to it were the series of the physics equations that dictates the movement of the ball. While you would think he just runs up and pegs it, hoping for the best, it's actually precise mental calculation he probably doesn't even realise he's doing, exactly the same as a Gerrard Hollywood pass.

My thoughts on the economics of football and a prevailing middle class in the surrounding area, is more expensive tickets, thus more funds for transfers and building, and the fact that in this country, that happens down south which happens to be around our capital, an affluent capital where rich sugar daddies want to spend fortunes on owning a club.

The private schools of this world do tend to give kids more chance of reaching sporting excellence, particularly in countries like South Africa, but in modern day England? Are we just talking the cricket team here?! In any eventuality, it definitely has very little to do with intelligence or all-round education, and more to do with funding and opportunity.

What was he actually asked? The quotes sound horribly ignorant and insensitive, but they might make a little more sense in context.

Alternatively, he might just be taking the piss now, as he knows he's going to get the boot. Not very nice or clever, if that's the case.
He might just be a bit thick himself, of course, and not realise just how bad his comments would sound.

I think the quotes from the OP have been lifted out of context, he's talking more about well rounded personalities, and interaction with the media...

    http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/mar/28/alan-pardew-newcastle-education-southampton

Still a bit thick, really. If you want our team to be better at media interactions, first teach our players ENGLISH <laugh>

There are different types of intelligence. Find it hard to simplify quick wits educationally to quick wits on a football field. Way too general just to say that an intelligent person will naturally have great reactions and awareness in a high-intensity football game. It's like assuming that Einstein would have been a great footballer based on his IQ. It really is just another piece of condescending crap from Pardew.

"Well the middle classes aren't the only intellectuals, really. I mean, I'm working class, and I battered the s**t out of all the toffs and raas in my class at Uni"

^^ Same here buddy. I studied history and most students were middle to upper class - I come from working class and went on to do a masters and get a distinction. It's not as black and white (no pun intended) as the class system assumptions make it out to be.

My thoughts too, this was said about 6 months ago.

Doesn't make Pardew any less of a c*nt though.

This for me. If similar type of comments had been made by a Geordie poverty group fighting for North-East schools to get the same level of investment as London then we wouldn't bat an eyelid. Pardew should have realised how this would sound though. Its almost a bit like (without getting into the rights and wrongs of it on this thread) everytime an English politician came on tv and gave an interview on why they wanted Scotland to stay in the UK. They were saying things that made sense to themselves without realising that every word they spoke was converting a No vote to a Yes vote - simply because they were saying it from outside and it sounded different from outside.

We already have more than enough reasons for wanting Pardew to go. This one is way way down the list for me.

<laugh> I don't think time should be a factor in this. Ok it just goes to show the desperation to paint a picture of doom but who gives a ****. I still think JPF and a bit of private time with Alan is the best course of action.

I was not aware of the timescale for the comment i posted but I dont think it really matters. We know what he thinks of the fans, just look at his comments after the Palace game, blaming the fans for wanting the team to score a 4th goal as one of the reasons we drew. FFS what does he expect fans to do, just sit there and say nowt, keep quiet and allow the team to quietly sneak a win. The guy is a Knob who just comes out with excuse after excuse, anything to deflect some of the blame away from himself. I dont know how he can keep going day after day at this club with the level of abuse that is thrown his way constantly, the majority of which is well deserved. His opinion of himself must be so high he thinks that everyone is wrong and he knows best. He will never resign and I have a horrible felling that Ashley will keep him for a while yet..
