Hope it's true, but I think a lot of it's blown out of proportion. Ronaldo's probably said the only place he'd leave RM for is us, and the media is getting carried away. At his age I think 60 million would be a fair fee, though I could see us paying more

Anybody else and I would agree. But if you look at any big move to and from Spain, particularly Real Madrid and Barca, and he has always been in the know. It's never just conjecture, it's inside information from club, players, coaching staff etc at those clubs.

I can kind of see LVG not wanting to sanction any potential deal for Ronaldo, as we've already spent a lot of money on attacking players, and we're already going after Strootman, Hummels and paying the 50 million for Falcao at the end of the season according to the article. So will there be anything left for a big move for Ronaldo?

Ronaldo is a great player, but 60 million for a 30 year old and outrageous wages could stop us strengthening in other areas.

One things for sure if there is any truth in Balague's comments then we must qualify for the Champions League for next season. I think that could scupper any potential deal if we failed to do that.

Ronaldo wouldn't be coming to us for the money as Real can offer him similar if not more, as could PSG. He'd be coming for football reasons, so we'd have to be in the CL

Not really as other clubs could offer him similar money if not more. I'm sure Real could afford the same if not more wages than we could

Agreed, he was the first one to report Di Maria was joining us.

I think the sponsors have had some input into the recent spending spree. Who would blame then for agreeing to pay the exorbitant sponsorship fees on the understanding that a portion of the money is allocated to securing world class talent/names like Di Maria and Falcao? I can see United going in for Ronaldo and a top class centre half next summer, although that does depend on qualifying for the CL next season. Interesting times!

The reputation of United globally rests on attacking flamboyant football. Lots of goals. Ronaldo will guarantee that. With a fee of 60m + 400k a week in wages, this represents a total investment of £140k over 4 years. This is an extra expenditure of £35m every year. This is peanuts for United.

Now this will REALLY bring back the fear factor at OT. <ok>

Torres was expensive but a 27 year old should be in his peak with a good few years left, he was purchased in Jan from a rival so there was a premium. Obviously on hindsight it was an awful bit of business but you can't compare every deal to it to justify the next one.

You just have to look at the other deals at similar money. Ronaldo, Bale, Suarez, James were all considerably younger than Ronaldo will be next summer. 60 million for a 30 year old is silly money. He'll only get less effective as his pace decreases with age and there will be no resale value. Madrid must be licking their lips. They've had the best years out of him and are going to still recoup 75% of what they paid for him just before the inevitable decline. You really are the new Chelsea!

Don't get me wrong, he'll still be a fantastic player for a while but it's a big risk. He's never really had injury problems either, one bad one at his age could finish him as a top line footballer like say Shevchenko.

No just based on the facts. When was the last time a 30 years old went for that kind of money and wages?

Ronaldo is a model professional, who does everything in his powers to stay at the top of his game. He could easily play on at the top level well into his late 30s. Even if his pace decreases we could still play him as a centre forward, and use him as a target man, as he's big strong, and very good in the air:biggrin:

I have massive respect for Ronaldo's work ethic, will to succeed etc and I'm sure he could still be a top player for a while. But a lot of his game is his pace and power which will diminish at some point regardless. Some world class players just drop of the edge once they get into their 30's. I've seen plenty of them at Chelsea. Shevchenko was one of the best strikers in the world the year before we bought him. Hit 30, had a nasty injury and was never the same.

Ronaldo also isn't as effective as a target man. He's better coming from deeper than playing up front. Looks lost playing that role for Portugal.
