I asked about wine a couple a weeks ago got some great recommendations - wondered what brands of whisky or whiskey you guys can recommend, I'm currently trying Snow Grouse (served straight from the freezer) it's a new one to me and have to say its so so, my fav is Bushmills Irish Whiskey - I prefer Irish to Scotch whisky but will try and drink any type or brand cheers
I'm a whiskey lover too...if I drink a good malt I will only put ice in with it. However, I'm mainly a blended whiskey man. and at the moment it is Jack Daniels and diet coke with ice that is my flavour of the month..
Fan of anything other than Jack Daniels. Big fan of bourbon and Japanese stuff in particular at the moment.
I like Nikka mate, the coffee grain is decent stuff but they're pretty much consistently decent throughout their range.
Used to like Johnny Walker and Famous Grouse although I've completely dropped whisky in favour of Lambs navy rum in recent years.
Thiiiis. I love Jim Beam, Devils Cut is vicious. Disco, my lass got me a bottle of JD single Barrel, and **** me it's decent. Standard JD I do like personally, little bit sweet but ok. Actually whisky I'm not overly keen on in truth, I can drink them, and enjoy them, but the aftertaste doesn't do it for me.
My wife's friend gave me a bottle of Vana Tallinn - a rum made in Estonia - its best rum I've tasted its exquisite
I've never tried the premium JD stuff. Dislike the regular stuff too much, find it sugary and syrupy. sure the top end stuff is better but I'd still choose summit else. To be fair I can drink it with diet coke or diet pepsi as RAW says above but I'd never dream of sticking a proper whisky with a soft drink.
JD is better with a light lemonade, because, as you correctly state, it is way too sweet. The single barrel was superb, they sell it most gaffes down London mate, try one, if you don't like it I will refund you. There are still better of course, but you'll be surprised how genuinely decent it is, as a non fanboy.
According to Wikipedia "It hits the drinker on the head and cuts off his legs". Sounds like my kind of drink!
I have 2 bottles of Vana Tallin tucked away in the booze cabinet, waiting for a reason to open them. There's quite a few bottles in there as I ain't touched spirits for about a year. There's a nice bottle of Balvenie, single malt scotch sitting in wait along with some JD, decent brandy and tequila. And of course the auld Becherovka. I'm an Islay malt man, so Ardberg one of my fave brands. Talisker and Lagavulin also. The last drink I had was to finish my 15 yr old Ardberg. Me and a pal finished off the best part of a bottle around this time last year. The hangover was severe.... I used to like the occasional JD and Jim Beam. the JD single barrel is surprisingly good. Very smooth, needs nowt bar the one cube. Did you ever go to the whiskey bar in Bratislava? Ran by an old Scotch fella. Absolutely top bloke, loads of interesting banter. he had a whiskey bar in Prague, too. We did a 'taste night' with him and learnt an awful lot about the stuff - 'twas where I learnt I was an Islay man, rather than Speyside. Was amazed how many Japanese whiskey brands there were.....and the price of some of the old bottles.
No mate, I didn't know such a bar existed there, when I next visit I'll make a point of allowing a couple of hours or so before moving on -be great fun arriving at my in-laws pished
The old boy was getting on a bit, so I hope he's still around. Quite the raconteur. Here's the link: Www.whiskybar44.sk Enjoy..
Glendronach 12yr. Balvenie 14yr Caribbean Cask. Balvenie 12yr Doublewood Benromach 10yr Auchentoshan Three Wood. Balie Nicol Jarvie. One of the greatest blends ever. BenRiach madeira cask. I could go on and on and on. I love my whiskys.
Love my whisky and a big fan of Islay or any other peated malt. Caol Ila is my favourite and their standard 12 year is probably the best of the bunch. Not as strong as something like an Ardbeg or Laphroaig and a touch sweeter. Caol Ila Moch is also very nice and a few independent bottlers do some good stuff like Caol Ila Young and Fiesty by Douglas Laing or Caol Ila single barrel by Signatory. After that I like Ardbeg - recently had a bottle of Uigeadail which I'd like to replace as they are getting more and more expensive. Currently got a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan which I'm waiting to open. Kilchoman is a new distillery on Islay and does some really interesting and tasty malts. They've only been going for 5-6 years and currently sell 3, 4, 5 year old bottlings - don't let the age put you off, older doesn't necessarily mean better. For example, distillers can use smaller casks which means the whisky takes on flavour much faster. Large distilleries will use larger casks (more efficient use of space) and let them age for 10, 15, 17 years etc and people will pay may expecting older=better... in reality they could be "aged faster" in these smaller casks but Joe Public wouldn't pay as much for them. And for value for money, if you like Islays, you can't do much better for your money than Big Peat. It's a blend of Ardbeg, Caol Ila, Bowmore and Port Ellen and it is delicious. On the mainland BenRiach are doing some good stuff including Solstice (if you can find it). There are also a few peated Speyside malts such as AnCnoc Rutter, AnCnoc Flaughter and Old Ballantruan which are worth trying. You can never go wrong with a Highland Park or Balvenie
