I read this and thought how? nobody seems to know. Some prat started a rumour like this before about Martin Pringle. Sad if true, sick if not.

Everyone seems to be referring to a 'reputation' and 'he had problems' but what were they?

I heard this on FaceBook yesterday Ponders. However, I couldn't find any confirmation online.

42 is no age...!! I played against his brother Richard quite a few times, and alongside his cousin Marvin for years in our school, Saturday & Sunday sides. Really nice lads thecpair of them.

My thoughts are with his family.

Confirmed on the OS, passed away on tuesday, but no more details. Tragically young, RIP David.

The club have confirmed on Twitter - no reason given. His spell with us seemed brief - maybe two seasons and perhaps injury blighted? I guess he was in that early Curbs flying solo era where we were finding our way and he wasn't there for the premier years which is why he unfairly slipped from memory. But he helped pave the way make no mistake - what I do remember is he scored a couple of absolute pearlers and he was the first striker you could call prolific and exciting for some years - he seemed like a breath of fresh air.

    Very sad, God bless.

I remember attending a match at The Valley against Oldham (perhaps 96/97) and it was/is one of the worst games I have ever seen. The Latics brought about 12 fans, the atmosphere was dead, and I dozed on and off until the 85th minute, and then suddenly David Whyte receives the ball, jinks past one, then another, and finishes with aplomb, and we win 1-0. <ale>

He suffered with mental illness but I don't know what caused his death. Very sad news for someone who should be in the prime of their lives. It is nice to see that it has been put on the OS. Personally he was one of my favourite players at the time.

    Very sad to hear.

I've only seen clips of him from 90s highlights reels, but he looked like a deadly finisher and a very popular figure amongst Charlton fans.

    RIP
