Ordering Ribery to return to national team contention or facing a 3 game ban.

Dangerous precedent or just hyperbole? Nothing surprises me with messrs Platini and Blatter.

Franck Ribery took the decision to retire from international football earlier this year, but it is not something that UEFA President and French legend Michel Platini (pic) is prepared to accept.

Ribery enjoyed an exceptional year with Bayern Munich in 2012/13 and finished third in last year's Ballon d'Or voting as a result. The 31-year-old winger was forced to miss the World Cup this summer through injury and has since declared himself unavailable for selection, citing his personal situation as the main reason.

However, Platini doesn't believe that Ribery should be allowed to make such a decision and has threatened that the player will be suspended if he does not change his mind about his future with the French national team.

In an interview published in the Sunday edition of German newspaper Bild, Platini angrily stated, "Franck Ribery cannot simply decide whether he plays for France or not. If coach Didier Deschamps invites him, he must come to the national team.
This is defined in the FIFA Statutes. If he does not come, he is suspended for three games with Bayern Munich."

He continued, "He is French and the 2016 European Championships are in France. I do not understand him."

Conversely though, in the same interview Platini seemed to happily accept the international retirement of former German captain Philipp Lahm, who is a year younger than Ribery.

The 59-year-old seemed to imply that, despite Lahm's position as one of the world's premier players, the decision to not include him in the future was that of German coach Joachim Löw and not the player.

"This is the decision of the coach. If there is collusion between Lahm and Löw, the Germany coach no longer nominated him, that’s one thing. But basically it is not the decision of Lahm, but Löw." – Jamie Spencer for FTBpro, September 8, 2014.

Not respecting a player's rights to not want to play for the international side is wrong...

Ribery must have his reason's, and as much as I find him a cheating prat Platini has no right in this really

Why didn;t he do this to Carragher or Gerrard etc. etc.

Every player has their right to retire when they want to rather than being forced into playing when they don't want to.

Platini and Blatter - right pair of ****s!!

tbh imo i think hes right no player is above their country if the manager thinks they are good enough to play for their national team then it is their duty to go, but as i say that, if its for personal reasons not footballing then i can understand why he might retire but Carragher retiring basically cause he wasnt getting his own way getting played out of posistion i will not stand for!

also am i right in saying the manager can call him up anyway even if has said he has retired from international duty? and thats what platini is saying that if he refuses it is against the rules? so thats why would get banned not platinis fault, would be the french manager for not respecting riberys views?
