75 years ago:

    1939

Hitler invades Poland on 1 September. Britain and France declare war on Germany two days later.

Not a peep out of our government; not a peep on here........

A just war, a war against fascist barbarity, a war against evil.

My mother mentioned it on weds! It was her birthday and war broke out on her 8th. It's was the start of her knowing nothing but bombings and going hungry. What a way to grow up and it's happening still around the world.

We're more focused on The Great War at the moment.

The older I get the more I appreciate the sacrifice hundreds of thousands of people made in both Wars (and indeed others).

I'm going to say that in my view, the lessons from history and human interest elements mean this one should stay, unless it drifts into modern politics.

Speaking of Germany, they agreed to postpone their planned international friendly with Israel next year to make way for a Euro 2016 qualifying match. Israel's qualifier against Belgium, originally scheduled for Sept. 8, was recently postponed with UEFA currently forbidding any of its official matches from taking place in the country due to the unsettled situation.

In other news, European Union nations are looking at sporting sanctions to punish Russia for its involvement in the Ukraine crisis but diplomats say the immediate targeting of high-profile events like the 2018 World Cup is unlikely at this stage.

There are a few on this board, myself included, who were born during WW2; and I'd guess there'll be a lot who remember the 'bombies' which were all over the city. In our innocence, the bombies were our playgrounds, but a lot of them must have been the sites of tragedy and death for those who had lived in them.

In WW1, the fighting took place 'over there', but in WW2 the battle included civilians of the UK. It would have been a nice gesture to the civilian dead - of Britain and of Hull - if the old National Cinema plans had come to fruition and the ruins had become a civilian memorial.

I remember visiting a museum in France many years ago, and I realised I'd never thought about what those in the occupied countries went through.

Sort of our propaganda after the war, i think. That we were not invaded and those lot had it easy. I'm not really putting that very well. This was an interesting article I read about what some suffered.

We take so many freedoms for granted, but the ease one group can inflict so much abuse on another shows how fragile it can all be.

its probably illegal on this board BUT

If the politicians were more accountable for the actions of war , there would be far less war .

Like this terrorist threat malarkey ...

    this works

Make politicians accountable for their foreign policy ,
Stop protecting politicians with police and legislation

    Why ?

Straight away the "terrorists" of the world won't bother attacking the general public , they will vent their anger on the politicians
because they can get at them

    Sod this Threat level bollocks

    A just war.

Shame the Red Army had to go round raping and slaughtering every German they could get their hands on when they reached Deutschland. I can't remember where I read it, but Stalin was into some weird experiments that even the SS would turn their noses up at.

    Humanzee soldiers. <yikes>

    Kinda like this:

Harry Patch was buried today. He was Britain’s last combat veteran of World War I. He died on July 25 at age 111. He was also the oldest man in Europe. Patch, who rarely talked about his war experiences, boasted that he hadn’t killed anyone in combat. “War isn’t worth one life,” Patch said, it is “calculated and condoned slaughter of human beings.” In his autobiography The Last Fighting Tommy, Patch wrote that “politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organising nothing better than legalised mass murder.” In the last years of his life, Patch warned some young naval recruits that they shouldn’t join.

There is accountability; The US president can be impeached although the British PM cannot, he/she can be given a vote of no confidence and will resign and the same applies to ministers (Chris Huhne for e.g.)

So which politicians are you going to blame for the actions of ISIS (Islamic State)? This is religious fascism and their goal of converting/deplacing and /or killing non-Sunni Muslims cannot be tolerated.

You could put some blame on those nations who may have aided ISIS indirectly (i.e. Turkey) as its goal by arming ISIS was to weaken Syria. However they've inadvertantly put themselves at risk.

Your statement about terrorists "not targetting the general public" is false, Al Queda, Taliban, ISIS, Hezbollah don't appear to bear this in mind while carrying out operations and strikes.

To them, the infidel hasn't accepted Islam and is in sin anyhow. So, they deserve to die and will be judged by Allah.

Stan started this thread to discuss the issues of WWII and WWI and how they seem to be getting overlooked. Let's not spoil it by drifting into more modern conflicts and politics, because it just ends in tears. Ta.
