Charlton set to swoop for Darren Bent on loan By Sam Rourke ⋅ September 2, 2014 ⋅Post a comment Filed Under Aston Villa, charlton, darren bent Charlton Athletic are interested in moving for former Addicks striker Darren Bent when the loan window opens, reports the Sevenoaks Chronicle. Bent is a target for Charlton on loan The 30-year-old currently plays for Premier League side Aston Villa, however he has endured a torrid time at the Midlands club since 2011. Bent spent last season on loan at Fulham, making 24 appearances and scoring three goals during his time there. The former England international was a fan favourite during his spell at the Valley, and he amassed 68 appearances whilst scoring 31 goals. In 2007, Bent left the London club to sign for Tottenham for a club record £16.5 million fee.
I have seen him on TV a few times for Aston Villa and Fulham, always as sub, and he has looked hopeless. Slow and misplacing passes. I am surprised he is still only 30. He played as if he was 40. Being a bit classy, not just a big lump, he ought to have a couple of good years still left in him. If he could get some form and fitness back he would be a great foil and mentor for Ventokele.
As I understand it he is on £70k pw at Villa, we couldn't even pay 10% of that so I can't see what's in it for Villa unless it is for 1 month and they hope he finds a bit of form.
I agree with Eddie, his last few tv appearances (stretching back to last season) show a different player from what we had. He is carrying at least a stone too much, and Laurence Bloom will have his work seriously cut out. It's romantic, and being back at a club where he is loved may be the spark Darren needs to get back to his best, but with the way we've conducted our business I'd be surprised if this story had legs. Pleasantly surprised.
One month would be useless for us. We would need at least until the January window. A month might be useful to cover someone due back from injury or are desperate for points at the end of the season in a relegation or promotion fight, but would be pointless in our situation.
This is the first transfer rumour in ages that has actually cheered me up, in spite of all the above common sense. I really should know better.
£16.5m!? Sometimes a statistic comes along that reminds just what an epic bollarks up the running of the club was post Curbs.
Not happy with it RLP? I believe it was in done in 5mil instalments too. Then think we cashed in upon our relegation to league one.
Not for me lads. A good Friend of mine is a season ticket holder at Fulham, and he said Bent was absolutely awful whilst there on loan. He said that he reminded him of a shot boxer whos had one or two too many fights. Also... when has a player returned to a club where they set the world alight and been anywhere near as effective in their second spell...? I know Chrissy Powell was pretty good in his subsequent two spells with us, but such examples of forwards being as good second time around are few and far between.
We would not want Darren Bent, dick - I saw him pre season & he is twice the player he used to be (literally)
yes Super I meant the price for Bent was great, its subsequent reinvestment on the other hand... Now what I don't get is Bent is a natural goal scorer whose game is based on running onto the better balls played through from behind. So his fitness is as key as his finishing touch. If, as it would seem, he has put on a bit of timber, surely that is the easiest thing in the world to sort out? 30 isnot past it - Villa, Fulham, and Charlton for that matter all have fitness and conditioning coaches that will work on rebuilding and sutaining his sprint speed. Putting issues of him taking responsibility for himself to one side, surely he is not a busted flush yet with the right work if fitness is the main issue?
