Reims in talks to sign Valentin Roberge
According to our colleagues at L’Equipe this morning, Stade de Reims are in the process of agreeing a fee with Sunderland for central defender Valentin Roberge.

The player has been told he can leave the Premier League side this transfer window.

Jean-Luc Vasseur remains locked in talks with Rubin Kazan over the possible signing of Chris Mavinga and Reims have also enquired about the availability of Hull City’s Yannick Sagbo.

Means we will probably sign 2 defenders before the end of the window.

Not sure I like the sound of this, unless we have 2 CBs lined up to come in

Brown, Oshea, Vergini doesnt give us much cover

SUNDERLAND defender Valentin Roberge could be on his way to Stade de Reims, according to reports in France.

The French side have reportedly opened talks with Sunderland over Roberge, who has been limited to a bit-part role since arriving at the Stadium of Light last summer.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet intriguingly said Roberge was “unavailable” for Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup clash at Birmingham City, when the 27-year-old would have featured.

And while the Black Cats have not been pushing Roberge towards the exit door - like fellow Bosman arrivals from last summer Cabral and Modibo Diakite - they have been willing to listen to offers for the ex-Maritimo man.

Roberge started the opening Premier League encounter at West Brom, yet after being harshly penalised for the penalty from which the Baggies equalised, he again struggled with the physicality of English football.

However, Roberge’s departure would make Sunderland’s need for further recruits at the back even more acute before Monday’s transfer deadline, as it would leave just five defenders in the first-team squad.

Sunderland continue to be linked with a loan move for Atletico Madrid’s Belgian international centre-half Toby Alderweireld.

And Poyet holds a long-term interest in Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk, although Sunderland have not made a formal bid for the Dutchman, despite reports to the contrary.

he 23-year-old, who joined Celtic from Groningen last summer, has suggested he is unsure whether he will still be at Parkhead beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.

“It is difficult to say if this defeat will have an influence on my future,” said Van Dijk in the Daily Record. “I want to play at the highest level.

“We were playing for a place in the Champions League and we did not deserve to go through. You have to be honest.

“I am a Celtic player for now but we will have to see what happens.

“The Champions League is the highest level and now we have gone into the Europa League. We shall see.

“Now I am a Celtic player but the transfer window is open until Monday night.”

Would Dijk play for us ? If he is looking to play at the highest level with either a club in europa and champions league then he wont be joining us

If arsenals interest is genuine he'll go there then, all players want to play at the highest level though

Let's be honest, he doesn't cut it. I'm sure we'd have another 2 lined up if he goes. Otherwisw, if he's our fourth choice cb, then ok.

We won't be signing two CBs unless one can play left back

Gus wants 7 defenders in the Squad (I question this)

    Jones
    Aanholt
    Brown
    O'Shea
    Vergini
    CB?
    LB?

Can any of the two linked play LB? I haven't checked. If one can we could be getting two cbs.

Well Gus said he Wanted Vergini in for CB and RB cover. I'd prefer a left footer covering LB like, what with us playing inverted wingers. Got to have someone working the flanks on their natural side to add width and balance.

Watched van Dijk 4 times now since we were linked, and he doesn't look anything more than bang average.

    I'm not keen, at all.

13th - he's a defensive liability in my opinion. The opener against WBA drove it home. 4th choice, perhaps. First reserve for brown or o'shea, no way.

I think Alderelweild(?!) played some games at full back for Atletico, who had Miranda and Godin as 1st choice CB. Can't remember if it was left or right

Meniscus, think the point I'm making he is capable of being 4th choice centre, 2nd choice left, of in front of back four. Want to hear people in not out, other way on fine but to many merry dances are being led. Don't forget how awful Virgini started, he has won most of you over I'm still 50/50 with him
