They need him and they've got the money and some. Think hey might need another 2 or 3 of a similar scale before the season starts to challenge for top four. They've looked hopeless.

Having watched them play against the nameless this afternoon they need a new team and manager, I actually think they are worse than under Moyes, flat rigid play with no pace or invention, one of the worst MU games I have watched in over 30 years.

180 minutes in with the shower he inherited and you think Van Gaal should be sacked?!?!?!!?? That's more LOL's than the headline of this thread!!

It's a bit weird, mind. I mean, I don't do the sums for them, but £70m with no guarantee of CL football is a hell of an outlay. I mean to put that in perspective it's 2 Andy Carroll's. Or an infinite number of Jack Colback's.

Sadly, football has got so completely out-of-hand, in financial terms, that this sort of fee will become normal for the better players.

I just hope that the people of the world keep wanting to watch football as much as the tv audiences suggest they do. Otherwise there is going to be one almighty bang when the bubble bursts.

Every day we get approached via the media to give money to yet another charity.
Manchester United fork out £63m for the playing contract of one player.

    Wow.

I realise many have gone before like Fernando Torres for £50m or Cristiano Ronaldo for £80m or even Gareth Bale for £85m but it's getting to the point where the insane sums of money being bounded about have begun to numb people to the sport.

It's so utterly obscene that only American Football can be compared to it now.

    Total madness <ok>

    Absolutely this! <ok>

The game is now wrong on so many levels, largely due to the finances of the top few.

As you say, it's ridiculous when you put into perspective what's going on in the world. What difference could money like that make to other people? Is one footballers transfer fee really worth the lives of thousands of others. Utter madness. It just seems to be getting worse.

It's called sarcasm dear, though having watched the match Van Gaal could do with being more flexible, he stuck to the shape he set out to play and really got nowhere, I also found it odd that with set pieces and corners they were not putting a player on the goalkeeper, this was mentioned in the commentary and they missed out on a few chances by not having a player in there.

I beg to differ on this. Having watched a lot of Real Madrid games the past few years, I do think Di Maria is worth that amount of money, considering the inflated prices every player costs nowadays.

The only question now is will van Gaal play to his strengths, which is to create from the winger position instead of having him adapt to his 3-5-2 formation. Di Maria isn't a player who can thrive in any of the positions in a 3-5-2, if they do play that.

Obviously we never want to see Manure have success, but I want to see Di Maria succeeding as a player, so hopefully he will not be played in some ridiculous central midfield role or as a wingback.

Been a United fan all my life ( The red one not the black and white one) and agree that transfer fees have gone out of all proportion. But why it causes so much humour to Tash is beyond me. A quarter of that amount would have Mike Ashley rushed to the nearest A & E with blood pressure problems. Sadly, it's the way football is going, and the days of the "elite" will just get better whilst the clubs with limited finances get weaker.

Is that fair, nope. But is anything fair in today's society

Apologies, and I do agree that you can't just keep doing the same thing over and over, yet expect different results. Thing is the media settled down into their red armchairs once LvG won all his pre-season and breathed a collective sigh of relief. "Phew", they thought. "Our Big Four are restored, thanks to Suarez disappearing and LvG coming in."

In the big money football world, it's obviously the going rate for someone like him. If they can afford the fee, why not pay it in their current situation.

For Toon fans it's mind-boggling in the little world of Mike Ashley, where you can buy a team for less.

We can all laugh for now, but, in time, Man U will have the last laugh on the rest.

In footballing terms, Man Utd have paid the going rate for one of the top footballers in the world. I also don't understand why Tash seems to keep getting in hysterics about it. None of our football clubs are in any position to laugh at anybody else.

Maybe so Reedio.heed, but with the backing of the Ruski to Chelski and the Arabs to City, it has inflated prices beyond belief. Maybe United can afford to spend on the merits of success. But the long term effect is ruining our game. Like a lot of you Geordies, I can remember going to United in the good old days and just joining the queue to get in, and not costing an arm and a leg.Whichever way we view it, the game has changed for the worse. Corporate hospitality, ticket agents, TV, and the media have taken away the working mans Saturday afternoon ritual.

The end result is the genuine fans suffer. I gave up the nicotine addiction which paid for my 2 season tickets at the Stretford End, but Mrs. Bonnet suffers with arthritis so we had to give them up. Was hard to take at first, but to be honest, you get to the stage where you question the costs.
