its ok, i picked 3 and I keep changing my mind. Really, the answer should be Roman Sebrle, Daley Thompson or Dan O'Brien, but no **** is gonna say that.....cept me
Fuppin knew you were going to say Christy Ring lad ha ha. Don't worry, was just chucking a Kilkenny great in there to rile those Cork feathers
Ali here too Saw him train for his fight against Cooper at the Thomas A Becket in the Old Kent Road. A real gent and legend.
Cant believe no one has mentioned Sir Steve Redgrave, I know its a long shot but surely in with a shout!
If we were to change to the the best Sportswoman would have to nominate Heather Mckay who dominated the sport of world squash for nearly 20 yrs and only lost 2 games at the beginning of her career before going on an unbeaten run until she retired at age age 40. Argueably Australia's greatest ever Sportsperson( including Don Bradman.) Heather was also a top- level player of other sports including field hockey and racquetball.
5 pages and still everyone seems to be naming people who were great (or ****e) at just one sport, what about those who did the job in multiple sports? C.B.Fry Eddie Eagan Jim Thorpe
Daley was everything, really cool bloke, humble in respect to his his roots and an awesome sportsman.
Principled too in his protest against Guinness sponsorship...even if it did hand them an advertising campaign on a plate that highly paid ad men didn't think of. The Carl Lewis t-shirt was just class...if he meant Carl Lewis... and yer man really real complaining about people excelling in a single sport, well Daley did it in 10....and could play a bit of football too.
Don Bradman for me. Nobody else has dominated a reasonably large sport so completely as he did during his career. Even now his test average is still nearly 40% better than anyone else in history. 12 double centuries in 52 matches, 3 more than anyone else despite missing out on the WWII years. His dominance forced teams to employ new tactics that have shaped the game's history ever since. Other sportsmen like Schumacher, Armstrong, Pele, Maradona, Taylor, Hendry have dominated but never to that level.
