    Match Report

A second-half goal from Ollie Clarke has been enough to give Bristol Rovers their first win of the season at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon.

Clarke spared Rovers the ignominy of losing to a team of part-timers for a second successive week by aiming an effort home from the best part of 25 yards after Rovers had been frustrated by their AFC Telford United for much of the preceding 55 minutes.

The goal, which was the result of good build-up play by Andy Monkhouse and Lee Brown, also served to bring a sense of relief to what had been a jittery crowd for the most part and allowed Rovers to go on and play with increased confidence thereafter.

Had AFC Telford goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge not made a decent stop to repel Lee Mansell’s attempt to convert a free-kick from all of 30 yards just after the hour mark the margin of what was a much-need victory could have been greater.

Rovers, meanwhile, had enjoyed the better of the first-half chances with defender Neal Trotman perhaps going the closest when hitting the crossbar with a diving header after connecting powerfully with a far post cross in the 24th minute.

Hedge also had to make a fine save to push a close-range Matt Taylor volley around the post towards the end of an interesting – if not scintillating – opening period.

Monkhouse also went close with another headed opportunity, while debutant Adam Cunnington, who arrived on loan from Cambridge United on Friday, forced Hedge to paw the ball over the top of his crossbar on another occasion.

AFC Telford, meanwhile, had clearly arrived with a rudimentary game-plan designed to frustrate and, for their part, played pretty well for the majority of the opening period before fading after the break.

They did not manage to carve out many attempts to open their own account at the other end, although striker Sam Smith did force defender Tom Parkes to block a shot on the goal-line after nicking the ball off Trotman as early as the 10th minute.

Bristol Rovers (4-4-2): Mildenhall, Lockyer, Parkes, Trotman, Brown, Monkhouse, Mansell, Clarke, Martin, Cunnington, Taylor (Harrison, 88). Subs: Gosling, White, Puddy, Leadbitter.

AFC Telford United (5-3-2): Hedge; Baynes, Akgrigg, Byrne, McDonald, Owens; Poku, Clancy (Deachey, 68), Farrell; Smith (Barnett, 82), Cooke (Phenix, 68). Subs: Pryce, Hancocks.

    Attendance: 5,450

    Referee: M Pottage
