i really dont get the daaw of london. i have never really liked it down south. the people up here are a lot friendlier, we have some stunning countryside and despite what people think there's plenty to do, its only idiots that cant find themselves something to do. if i was a young footballer i wouldnt want my family anywhere near london

I find that those who need noise & bustle, and to be surrounded by lots of people, are often insecure.

The people I know who 'love' London are newcomers whereas Londoners have either left or don't speak too highly of it.

London has a very transient population and 'friends' come and go ..... some people like it that way and football players are no different.

Loyalty it seems is temporary, these days, and footballers have 'new best friends' every other season.

Sunderland isn't London, I've lived in London, West,Whickham, nice place, the city was a **** hole, took hours to get anywhere, hated it, glad to get back to South Shields, to normality, where people weren't trying to climb over each other, Sunderland town centre was much calmer, a better place by far than London, spent 2 years there, me & my lass were glad to get back to the North East where the people are a better class!

Excellent thread. I have lived in London and Birmingham and many other places and IMO there is nowhere that matches by birthplace, the North East. Hated Birmingham, too far from the sea and unfriendly people, and London is not only unfriendly, dirty, crowded, noisy and takes forever to get anywhere but is far too expensive for normal people to live there.

I can just about see the attraction of London for young, single, rich people like many foottballers. But if you want to settle down, have kids and a LIFE, the North East cannot be beaten. :D

London is up there with New York for me, I love the energy mega cities give and the endless interesting culturally diverse things to do. I like the fact that it's rich with young entrepreneurial types and that new and different business ventures can be a success because people are willing to try new things, guess that makes me insecure and an idiot then.

Or more interested in money & 'glamour' than family, friends & your own roots ......... I don't know you so only you know.

I wasn't being personal mate, just generalising, I've found that the friends, I have in London, will talk about the many theatres, the museums, the cultural diversity & the attractions then go down the pub with their mates or sit watching the telly like people all over the country.

A few years ago, Rodney Marsh a Sky Sports pundit made the remark that most footballers go to London because there's nothing to do up north. Gordon McQueen was a pundit as well after playing Boro at the time, he countered that he disagreed, there's plenty up here, if not more, got everything London has & more, what he liked was that no-one bothered him or his family, the banter with fans & the fact that 20 mins north, west or south you could be out in the wilds of North Yorkshire, Durham & Northumberland, it's just that no-one realises what a gem the north east is until they get there!

I love the north east with a passion, it's part of me, maybe when I'm older I may return but I'm not ready for the quiet life nor wish to get **** faced with my mates every Friday night, somewhere in between I guess ha ha.

It's hard to judge how a footballer feels, they usually just play play stations go to the cinema and nandos anyway.

Possibly just young! Or young at heart at least. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Many of the 'young entrepreneurial types' you talk about are the most boring people I ever met. Self obsessed, with no interest in anything other than themselves and what will make them money, generally no sense of social responsibility at all.

Tell me why you have to be in London to try new things? The North East has always been a hotbed of invention, with hundreds of years of technological and manufacturing expertise. We would benefit from some of this entrepreneurship up here. Modern communications means businesses don't need to be based in London to be successful surely?

This is the issue with persuading people to come to the North East. There is EVERYTHING you could ever want in respect of business opportunities and ready made labour market, right here. Add the benefits of affordability of property, availability of great art, music and culture, fantastic history, beautiful environment, and quality of life for your family. What else can any human being need? Maybe it is not us that need to broaden our horizons, it is the people who feel places like London are the be all and end all of modern life. The media and governments may believe it, but most of us know better.

Billy's right, there's a lot of sensible stuff being posted on here ....... whatever your viewpoint.

I'm about to say something which will probably go down like a sack of **** but it's my honest opinion, not being deliberately controversial.

I don't like a so called 'cultural melting pot' and I don't see as many benefits as some people seem to.

The world is a very small place now and I can experience the wonderful cultural diversity in the world by jumping on a £50 flight.

I'd much rather see Italians in a village in Italy with other Italians than knocking out 'home made pasta' on a stall on a London market.

I get no cultural pleasure from driving through Brixton and seeing old Methodist chapels turned into Asian bed & mattress warehouses.

I don't even believe that different cultures enter into a harmonious society to any great degree in any case.

And if they did we'd end up with a mish mash of mediocrity with the best of the various cultures diluted and diminished.

Yes people might have an immigrant workmate but that's hardly entering into a wonderful worldwide utopia.

Going into an authentic tapas bar in Madrid is fantastic .......
..... being served a watered down version by a blank faced Romanian in Covent Garden is just ****e.

Not at all Micko. Horses for courses.

I lived just up from Covent Garden for a couple of years in my late twenties. Older now and hate the place!

What's to disagree with Smug? The ghettoisation isn't as bad London as in other cities, countries, etc, and where I've worked for the last 30 years, I've worked with a hundred different ethnicities, liars of religions, etc, etc, and the only hassle or argument I've ever got involved in in all that time is about football. Flamin Geordies get everywhere :emoticon-0102-bigsm
