"SUNDERLAND are waiting to see which players are considered surplus to requirements among the Premier League’s heavyweights before making their final moves in the transfer market.

The Black Cats are looking to make two or three further signings before the transfer window shuts on September 1, with those captures now highly likely to be loans."

This was always going to be the case.

Not knowing which division we'd be in, until the end of the season, made it impossible to plan ahead.
At one stage Poyet, and the club, were probably planning for a promotion push from the 2nd division.

And now rather than bringing in random foreign players Sunderland seem to want players with Premier League experience.

The word 'rejects' is harsh and players like Gomez can do a good job for what's hopefully a mid table side.

The next week could be much more interesting than the last.

Im starting to get annoyed with some fans on twitter. It can't be judged till 11pm September 1st. After last season there's no way we wont strengthen before the window shuts

Good point that and I expect the club to be looking to take full advantage.

There`ll be some very good players who won`t get into the top 6 teams and would suit us just fine. It would be nice to think this is the time Gus is waiting for.

We could do with a swoop. Or a pounce even.

we have always done well in the loan market, and i know its not ideal, without them there is a good chance we would have been down by now. im sure gus has a few irons in the fire and last season exploits have hopefully raised the profile of the club a bit and players are more willing to come and see what we are about

Long term we need to move on from loans, we are just making the top teams stronger. Local journalists are suggesting that because we bought Rodwell we won't spend the money on Borini so hoping for loans, even though we have shipped out loads and have a thin squad. Poyet made reference to man u spending more on Rojo than we will spend in total.
I'm glad we have a philosophy in playing and character but feel like Short needs to spend more, he always spends what we have recouped from previous windows. We've been waiting to of load to get the wage bill down yet here we are in the same position.

More loans that we will go up in price thanks to us or won't come permanent.

    Sorry a bit negative today.

Someone tell me what we have spent this season, 10 mil?

The same journalists who are suggesting that we're still hoping to sign Borini ........ either way they'll be 'right'.

What we need to do is develop young players who will improve us and provide further funding when they're eventually sold.

We'll never compete with the top teams so spending has to be realistic.

I agree with you that the top teams will grow richer but that's just a sad irreversible progression.

Hang on a minute. We paid £10m for Rodwell and the offer of £14m for Borini is still on the table isn`t it? Where do they get the idea it`s one or the other?

The possible loan for Borini happened because of delays in him signing not because we didn`t want to (or couldn`t afford to) buy him.

we really do need more players coming through the acadamy. other then henderson we havent really done much. we need to be spreading our net far and wide to get the best young talent from around the world instead of local lads. you see teams like southampton constantly turning out quality acadamy products and making good money from them when they are sold and we need to be doing the same

It's understood that the offer is no longer on the table and the Borini deal was also affected if we got Vara on loan. Now we are hoping we can get Borini on loan when they finally sign Balotelli. Local journalists normally report from some facts not completely made up so I believe it, they also read between the lines, like Poyet stating rojo fee is more than we will spend in total.

We are still a sleeping giant Imo, we always just fall short it's so frustrating.

    Transfer wise £12.5m (Rodwell 10, Buckley 2.5)
Factor in signing on fees for Pantilimon, Gomez and Jones plus agent and loan fee for Vergini Id imagine thatll take it to around £15m.

We have as much money as Ellis Short is willing to spend. How much that is only he knows.

I don`t. One of the worst is the Chronic for making stuff up. They have no more idea than we have of how much we will spend.

I think with Rojo, Gus was just using it as an example of the gulf between spending powers not an indication of how much we have.

    I totally understand Micko's frustration.

Having said that I wouldn't want a 'Hull situation' where the owner is allowing Bruce to build up a huge debt on a groundless club.

I also agree with Pops that the figure was an offhand comment, not a summary of the club's finances.

I think we have spent our lot for this window with some loans left for desperate to play players.

Short got it so wrong with Di fanti & pdc, and we nearly paid the ultimate price, we have shipped loads out and look barely better than last season as it stands. I'd be happy if we got Borini permanent and Richards permanent which would be around 30 mil and we'd look like a club moving forward and a good side. At the minute we are barely better than last season in which we just survived. We get 3 loans in we will be in the same boat next window.

I appreciate it's hard to attract players when you flirt with relegation every season and that there a week left of the window, but it's frustrating the he'll out of me.

If we're little better than the last month of the season I'll be quite happy ...... there's a good team in there with a very good manager.

I think the money is there for the right player. I am sure Short woukd spend 100m on messi if he could because it would be worth it for the clubs profile alone. The truth is Messi would never come. What they won't do this season is spend money on crap.

I would much rather we signed players than loaned them. Nowadays though players contracts are like 4 year loans because they run their contracts down in order to get a free move on big wages.

We will sign some more players, I just hope they will be olayers that will improve us.

    Excellent point <ok>

I'm convinced Borini would rather make money than play football.

In the current stinking way of things he can sit out his contract, go shopping with his lass & move for a big fat fee then repeat the process.

He'll end up a millionaire without even doing any work ...... another 4 year contract, after Liverpool would take him close to retirement age <doh>

I am in the no more loan players camp.

As a policy it doesn't help SAFC move forward.
And that is what I want for Sunderland, to take that next step up.
The Borini situation is a good example.
We have helped him as much as he aided us, yet he quite clearly doesn't want to move here permanently. (Unless he ends up without any other option.)

The next step up I'm talking about isn't us challenging for the title, but being a comfortable mid table team.
If we have to fill gaps in our team left by loanees every season, nothing is going to change.
And it's squeaky bum time come season end.

In which case we wouldn't have had him at all and might have ended up with another Danny Graham as a permanent buy.

Or a Gyan who signs and ****s off at the first sniff of more money.

At least the loans actually see the season out <laugh>
