I think it was Gonzalez who gave Baines a hard time. For £4m he'd be really good and I'd prefer him to Townsend. The only fear is that as he is so versatile (can cover CM and RB) Saints may feel they can let Jack go (hope not though!).
Just hope this Townsend rumour is a smokescreen. One dimensional and now injury-prone. Plus runs into advertising hoardings. THough I suppose at least we should be glad we are able to transfer. Barcelonaâs appeal has been rejected, and now they are f**ED! All they have is until the end of this window to get in as many players at whatever price they want, on top of the unwanted scraps they have already acquired in Suarez and Vermaelen, before they will not be able to make any transfers for an entire year. Talk about FIFA coming down hard! Even the mods on here wouldn't go that far. How will they compete?
probably the same problem we see time and time again. aim high, miss out after a drawn out negotiation, the achievable targets have already been achieved by those who weren't aiming so high.
Most likely. We were linked with him for a while and i was hopeful they would see it through...might've happened while we were in between managers too now that i think about about it. Still frustrating to think that as long as we matched wages etc a solid bid of somewhere around £1.00 would've had us on top of the list
Yeah, reminds me of Steve Stone, an average player for club but steps up in a England Shirt. In Townsend's case maybe being loaned out at Spurs umpteen times over many years and never guaranteed to start for them consistently, is part of the reason for the notable England performances, the elation of recognition. With his injury he never really had the chance to transform that form when in a Spurs shirt. A risky signing, certainly at the price Spurs would demand.
As much as I can feel sorry for PL footballers with their endless good time lives, I can feel a little bit sorry for Townsend. Here is a good player who is effectively in limbo. Career almost totally stalled. Another Scott Sinclair or Micah Richards, or any other effectively stock piled footballer. It doesn't help the players or the national game to have these people not playing regularly. Given regular football, these players could really develop.
I always saw flashes of real skill when Andros played for England...perhaps he needs a chance to play with a proper side
I agree - for all we complain about young, developing players getting hoovered up by the big clubs, cynically speaking just to nullify the threat of smaller clubs, we should welcome opportunities for the same players (even if they're stalled for a few years) to move on to somewhere they can actually constructively continue their development.
FIFA showed just how effective they are when allowing Barca (who were banned from signing players) to sign, play & unviel Suarez (who was banned from any football related activity).
yeah, taking into account his injury he had 12 starts and 13 sub appearances in the league last season, not to mention cup apearances
I'd absolutely love Townsend. He may not be good enough for a top 4 team, but he'd be exceptional for any mid-table squad.
Oh well. The way some people go on you'd think he never plays. Must admit, with my limited interest of other clubs, I assumed so. And we know what they say about assumption being the mother of...
I think he's exactly the sort of player we should be looking at right now. There has been a certain propensity for us to only look for massive, exciting signings. It's part of the reason for the thinness of our squad.
I'd happily take Townsend, with the right guidance and coaching he would be fantastic for us. The problem is we will never get him without Morgan going the other way.
Can't see Spurs dealing with us as we won't share our toys with them...no way do I want us to part with MS.
