SB brought in 532, he was the only one that did it. Now? everyone is trying his idea, the new word in football is WINGBACK. what happened to 4231?? I remember reading an article berating him for using wingbacks and it was stating that "there was a reason why no one uses that outdated formation anymore" 9 months is a long time in football.
From what ive heard recently, 3-5-2 was first made popular in this country by Glen Hoddle when he was England manager.. Bruce himself said he tried the formation out years ago with Birmingham i think he said, also tried it at Wigan. What annoys me is that we've been using this formation since Bruce came in really, Liverpool used it a few times last season... but now since the world cup and van gaal's holland used it effectively its talked about so much. The worst bit is when i read some match report online saying "both Hull & QPR tried the new and popular 3-5-2 formation for the first time" do your ****ing research please!!
It is. Some think it is 5 - 3 - 2 mind but it is a formation that can be quickly changed to 4 - 3 - 3 as well. But the reason SB started to use it was that we had the players to fit the system. LVG as an example does not - yet. Now it works very very well for us.
As it was in the 90s it depends on the players used in the wide roles and in central midfield. At some point since then it's changed and we've lost a way differentiating between different tactics. Most obvious was when teams first started playing 4231, rather than acknowledging it was a 451 with 3 attacking midfielders the media decided calling it 433 made the games they were trying to sell to people sound more attacking and exciting than they really were. A true 433 would be 3 central forwards and 3 central midfielders with the only width coming from the fullbacks, not making a front 3 from 1 striker and 2 wingers (Man U didn't claim it was 424 when they had Giggs and Kanchelskis on the wings now did they?). A similar thing happened with 532, where to make it sound better they decided the primarily defensive players who also had attacking duties should be classed as part of the midfield and not the defence. If for example we play with wing backs in the wide position, and no defined defensive midfielder then it would be 532. The wingbacks are expected to get back and defend like fullbacks, allowing the centrebacks to remain more compact in the centre of the pitch and the midfield to remain in more advanced positions in front of the defence. If the right wing back is beaten the centrebacks move across and the LWB drops in as a left back to create a sort of back 4. Counter attacking we'd try to play through the middle and then get it wide when the WBs had chance to make up the ground. The advantage being that you can pick which side you want to go when you see how the opposition is recovering rather than immediately, but it does mean that at the start it's easier to defend against as you're very narrow until the WBs catch up. If on the other hand we use wingers with little/no defensive duties in the wide positions and have a holding midfielder like Meyler in the middle that becomes an extra then it's 352. When we're attacked down the flanks with the wingers not having defensive responsibilities the centrebacks at either side of the 3 are expected to come across and cover their side and the defensive midfielder will drop into the backline to provide additional help. Counter attacking this way you have the option of going down either flank straight away but you're committed to that side once you make the choice. Taking 2 lineups from our current squad, the first one is clearly 352, and you can't really give the second one the same name when it would work so differently can you? McGregor Bruce, Davies, Chester Snodgrass, Huddlestone, Livermore, Meyler, Ince Jelavic, Sagbo and: McGregor Bruce, Davies, Chester Rosenior----------------Robertson Huddlestone, Livermore, Snodgrass Jelavic, Sagbo

When they talk about van Gaal, it's all about whether the formation will work. They're obsessed with the 3-5-2. No one seems to have even noticed that their squad is ****, they've made like one really significant signing in the last god knows how many years and lost good players this summer. For a club their size I just don't get it. Why don't they strengthen like the other rich clubs do? Even Arsenal make an effort to improve, they just always end up buying the same type of foreign puffs over and over again. They even turned Ozil into a pussy, I used to rate him before he went there. He looks **** now.
You've clearly never seen Anthony Wilson play, the lad uses no other part of his body if he can help it.
