Evans tells us that his plan is to build gradually, not splashing out but bringing in a couple of players each window so that there is an overall 'net gain' season on season. The problem with this strategy is that: 1) By the time the squad is of a high standard using this approach, half of the initial squad will be approaching retirement age. 2) At least five other teams each season will be making bold signings and gazumping our 'net gain' many times over. 3) Every couple of years we'll sell a Wickham or a Cresswell, which means the best we're doing with a couple of signings is treading water. 4) Too many of the signings we make are turd (Nouble, Taylor) or no better than we already had (Skuse, Anderson). The sorts of players that make an impact (Johnny Williams, Gio Dos Santos) don't tend to come for free and when they do come cheap (McGoldrick) they'll be snapped up by a top club (like Rotherham) before the decade long improvement programme reaches its climax.
I couldn't agree more Yorkie! I just wish Evans would **** off and give someone else the chance to run our club because his tenure has been a complete balls up from day one!
I've said the same thing in the past JWM. I feel as though he's getting it right in terms of the academy, although he should of gone for Cat 1 to start with. The problem lies with the lack of serious investment in the first team squad and as Hampy says, the best we're going to do is tread water. If Mick was given money would he spend it on the right player? The other thing is, even if Mick did get the right player I have a feeling that he would knock all of the attacking sense out of him, he seems to be quite good at that.
The game has changed, Financial Fair Play means we can't 'splash out' like you are asking for. ME is finally seeing that stability, consistency and the long-game is best for the club and I personally applaud it. I would also point out that the 2 signings you have highlighted were one of the few we have paid a fee for (albeit small for Nouble). What about Berra, Chambers, Murphy, McGoldrick? All of which we got on free's. You clearly do not have to spend big to attract some of the better players, not whilst we have a stable club with a long term owner, hard working players, and a fantastic manager!
I think you can improve year on year without buying players to do so...it's done by coaching the players you have rather than trying to solve every problem with pound notes.... I for one would rather it take a few years to get there with a group of players that have been coached and improved at the club rather than spunking money left right and centre to try and buy success...but that's just me. As long as we improve year on year I will be moderately happy I do think that if MM wanted a player for cash Evans would back him but I think MM believes the players are out there for next to nothing so why spend. Some people look at Man City Chelsea and the like with envious eyes but football is bigger than just money.... To me anyway.....and I'm sure people would be moaning whatever situation we found ourselves in just look at the Man U fans last season poor buggers.
There's no real penalty for FFP and we were using that as an excuse not to spend money way before it kicked in courtesy of Clegg's wonderful decision making, maybe because Magilton and Keane pissed away millions. We have fans putting money into the academy but spending on academies doesn't even count toward FFP and never has! We have to compete and with the best will in the world McCarthy doesn't have anything like an even playing field compared with some of the other clubs in the league. To have a chance with our current strategy we need to hit a gold mine of lower league and youth talent but we're letting Jack Marriott's talent go down the plughole.
I'm more than happy for Marriott to go on loan to Carlisle for a month mind you. 1- We have the international break coming up, league 2 doesn't. 2- Is he better than Murphy/ McGoldrick? I don't think Sammon will be as bad as people think either. You're right Hamps Mick doesn't have a level playing field it's ridiculous so I think with the parameters he has to work under, he's doing a good job. It's fair to say I'm not delighted with everything he does, but I'd rather Mick than Keane or Jewell anyday!
But it's because of Magilton, Keane and Jewell that we find ourselves in this position! We have been reduced to being a tin pot club begging for scraps! Thank you Evans now **** off as it's getting boring!
Hey i would rather a certain Millwall manager but heyho!! Oi warky, where are Millwall in the league! Hehe!! Super Olli, that was Evans biggest mistake, going for Mick instead of Holloway, dull v entertaining, no contest!! Lol!!
If only we had have paid 2 million for Goldy and another for Berra I'm sure things would be different ...and poor Marriot being sent away to play football how can that develope his game rather than sitting the bench...... Honestly we lost a game ..get some perspective......it doesn't mean the club is in any different position as it was after the Fulham game or during pre season.
But hey, you guys know my thoughts, hopefully you can give me hell at the end of the season when we are in playoffs and Olli has taken Millwall down!!
I would say that i find it rather unfair to slate ME, im sure i have read that he is pumping plenty of money into the club and im sure it was your beloved Mick that said this!!
So tell me where the Cressy and Wickham money has gone! In Evans back pocket that's ****ing where! Don't get suckered in by all the propaganda Spanish!
I actually think that Evans listens to Mick on what he wants and needs and where to spend money and such.
I LOVE Holloway's attacking footy for sure! Problem is with the defence Holloway would have had, he would have taken us down. End of. He also isn't adverse to jumping ship when things aren't going well.....
