The only purpose I really see for squad numbers is sentiment, and if there's one player who deserves to be honoured through sentiment it's Kelvin. I'm more than happy to let him have the ceremonial gesture of keeping the number 1 until he retires.

That's the point LTL, it has not been perfectly civil all the way through. You know as well as I do that personal attacks are not tolerated on here: this is a public forum which anyone can stumble upon, and we have previously been threatened with removal from Google listings for feuding which gets out of hand. I completely agree that the whole point of the forum is to discuss things and disagree with things and generally sound off, but we do not resort to personal insults. I'm obviously not accusing you personally but making a general point here. And for a while there, it was most definitely off topic.
Okay, but there was one personal attack Chilco (which I suggested was ignored) - the two quotes you used were a little confusing as they were pretty much on-topic. FWIW I agree with the personal attacks thing, but I think the signing of Long has generated some interesting discussion and diverse opinions, which is the lifeblood of a place like this. I'm not really sure you're getting annoyed at the right thread to be honest, that's all!
I just have higher standards than you obviously. Tbh my posts have probably come across as more negative than I meant them to reading them back. If we were talking in real life I think you would see that my tone is more "bemused and sarcastic". It's not long ago I was accused of being a happy clapper on this very same forum!
I'm really sad to see him leave but at £12.5M we're laughing all the way to the bank. I hope we replace him with someone better, this transfer could turn out to be pretty pointless if we don't.
