They're trying to avoid the same things happening that happened in the LA race riots. There news broadcasts and videos were accused of making the riot spread to neighbouring communities. Not sure I completely buy that, or that I agree with 'no recording' but I think the police are, in this case, trying to do what is best to contain the violence and stop the thuggery from spreading.
