Justice should be served by sentencing alone - the small crumb to the victim of any crime that the perpetrator is unable to harm anyone else for X years. Unless there is a financial loss to the victim then why should they get a payout? The punishment is equally about cleaning up society. Putting a price on a crime that is dependent on the accused's bank balance is an insult to all those victims to people of lesser wealth. We have put ourselves in this ridiculous position (or more specifically, the law-makers have). Otherwise I might as well go out and antagonise a rich kid - could be the best thing to ever happen to me if he wades in. In this particular case, something seems awry but, if it's that amiss, why did the first appeal fail? I'd need to hear both sides for balance. Definitely, removing incentives from being victims to the wealthy is the best place to start to remove crank claims.
