3.50 Carlisle Rasselas Course and distance winner last time out and trainer is in great form at the moment. Jockey was won 3 times on the horse previously too. 5/2 a fair price

It is indeed sad to read of the passing of Robin Williams. This amount of outpouring which is everywhere at the moment really brings home just what this guy meant to people and the power of the narratives within the films he brought to life. One thing I am also a little sad about is that much of the weight of peoples words are focussed towards the manner of his passing (which at this time points to suicide) and the mourning him as some kind of a tragic figure due to this.

Whilst Robin Williams clearly wrestled with difficulties during his life it is clear that anyone of any reflection and possessing any kind of inquisitive nature, and a larger than average intellect, will in their life suffer these things to some degree, for life is terribly inconsistent and the way in which we are offered to interpret and accept it does not make entire sense to a man of reflection, intelligence and curiosity. These things are sought to be explained away to the masses through religion or simply distracted from through entertainment, for those of reflection however these things will never be enough. This I think may go some way to explain why Robin Williams had constant battles with awareness altering substances and a long engagement with depression. These things may have taken a price but I would guarantee they gave as well, I would have no doubt that the pressures and experiences that these things provoked left him with a clearer picture than he would have done had he chose to simply to decline the dance.

My other contention with Robin Williams is that to me he had simply hung with too many of the right people and experienced too many altered states of consciousness to have a simple tragic suicide. It's quite possible he simply made a choice. It's possible that he knew that the experiencing of oneself objectively (life) was not the holy grail of understanding, that he no longer needed the experience of passing images, experiences or narratives that ultimately he recognised as transitory regardless of what we call them or seek to identify as our possession through them. Maybe he had got tired of the need to maintain this body simply to facilitate further passing experiences, maybe he chose to get off the ride at a moment of his choosing.

Now I would not have any issue with calling your average suicide a tragedy as it is often through despair that one arrives at such a stark crossroads. I just have a feeling that Robin Williams was a different type of man and that to now cast him as a tragic figure would miss that this was someone who really lived, really fought hard to find meaning and understand himself as more than a passing psychological narrative lived only in his own mind. This is a man who simply could not have brought what he did to the characters he played without understanding them from his own experience of himself. He may at 63 have completed the ride but chances are not, but I think it's certainly possible that a man of his understanding made a decision which was to simply recognise that it was now time to bring the curtain down on this trip. Whatever the reasons (and we will never know) this was not the passing of a tragedy, rather this was the passing of a comedy, a tragedy, a love story. Most of all a passing of a man who stood as an example of what an explorer of his own humanity looked like and a questioner of what may lead beyond, he would have been this whatever field he found himself in, it's our good fortune he found himself in the field he did, a comedian, someone who satirises that which we are told is normal, and an actor, someone who provides skilful narratives to enable reflection and provide the keys to rooms within us as yet unnoticed. Robin Williams will be missed, it is a poorer place today for us.

Sorry for bringing you down Bustino, perhaps should of gone on the any other stuff thread but was just responding to the previous posts of sadness.

As for tips, no one should be following mine at the moment unless seconds pay out as winners.

Ran well last time and this race looks winnable.

No tip which is probably a good thing but the passing of Robin Williams gave me and the ol gal a bit of laugh. We were discussing it this morning and she was remembering Mork and Mindy from her youth when my 12 year old daughter drifted into the room. She momentarily dragged herself away from her iphone and with a look of horror asked if Robbie Williams was dead. I reassured her that the great man from Stoke was still alive and well and we started to tell her about the comic genius and actor that had just past away. However it was soon fairly clear that whatever was on her iPhone was far more interesting than what we had to tell her. Me and the ol gal looked at each other both laughed and got on with the business of breakfast. RIP Robin Williams

Very interesting that De Sousa gets off Late Shipment to ride Zipp now. 7/2. Worth a little bet IMHO.

I think De Sousa is a bit of a liability in a finish at the moment Bob. I watched him on a Noseda horse at Windsor fiddle with his reigns and his whip as if they were piping hot when all he needed do was drive. He did the same on this horse unfortunately. There is an aspect of possibly the horse pulling himself up but De Sousa just needs to learn to drive, if the horse is responding to the whip keep it in one hand as long as the horse does not drift. No need change hand, no need fiddle with your reigns just DRIVE to the line.
