Am I the only one concerned that Arteta was made captain? He is a great guy and a good leader but a captain should play every game he is available. To lead the team on the pitch. If we play arteta every game then we wont have space for a new big signing like khedira/carvalho. I cannot see wenger spending 20million pounds on a DMF and then putting him on the bench AND I cannot see Wenger putting his newly named captain straight on the bench. Im worried!
Why would he put Arteta straight on the bench anyway, even if he wasn't captain? Even in his worst days he still contributes a lot.
I wouldnt put him on the bench if we did NOT get a DMF. However, if we do get one then he would be the one to bench. If we got a DMF then who would you bench? Or you think we do not need a DMF?
You mean in the sense that he will play so Wenger will not sign a DM?? If that is the case it is not unexpected but it would be an opportunity missed. But as Wenger showed last year being a captain does not mean you play. Besides I am sure Wenger knows it is a ceremonial at best, it should not play any part in tactics or team selection.
I agree with all your sentiments, I still think we need a strong robust DM style midfielder. But I don't feel that confident that it'll happen now with Arteta getting the captaincy. However, maybe this will up his level of play? I don't recall many bad games for us and he is quite consistent, and has bags of experience which is something we need in the middle of the park.
Yes exactly, I cannot see him getting a big name player and then not play him. Perhaps his plan is to have Chambers as his understudy. But that means this year we will suffer in the middle despite his experience and good stats. Against big teams he was run over as a DMF. Yes Wenger did play our captain last year because he lost his place after bad performances but we are now at the beginning of a season. I thought Wenger had a DMF in mind and was negotiating but it looks like that is not the case.
That's why you have vice-captains and third captains ... so you always have one on the field. It went Vermaelen/Arteta/Mertesacker last year, now it'll go Arteta/Mertesacker/? this year. There'll always be one of them on the field.
