It's interesting to read that Hull had more Pals Battalions than far bigger cities like Sheffield, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, Birmingham, Edinburgh. We mustered 4 in total, same as Liverpool- only bettered by Manchester, Salford, the Public Schools & Tyneside. Our lads were up for the fight it seemed.
Ah ok ,I thought I'd answered ur concerns in my first reply #29 As I say , in 1914 the British royal family had a very strong German feel and look to it , But you seem to miss the sentiment of my point each time - no matter.
European royalty was bound together by dynastic arranged marriage for centuries. The period between the French Revolution and the First World War saw all of the remaining royal dynasties of Europe take on a strong German feel as Germany then was divided into small principalities all offering up their sons and daughters for arranged marriage to strengthen alliances. Therefore virtually ALL the remaining royal households of Europe became part German Hanover-Habsburg-Hesse-Brunswick-Luneburg-Holstein-Wolfenbuttel-Battenberg-Romanov-Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's. For the 100 years since WW1 this has reversed and the Royal family have increasingly married local lasses and re-established their Britishness. Clear?
