It will only happen if he has a good season, so not worried about that now. Play well and it could happen, so why would you laugh?
I think he will do an ok job, our ex players have left in search of a champion league medal, and hey presto next face through the door has brought one with him.
I have been going on about Targett for ages and yeah he should get his chance. It still doesn't mean I rate Bertrand, if we wanted to go the young English route we should have brought Creswell.
I think he means that, we won't need to take up the option to buy as Matty Targett will be ready. A loan works as it covers us for one season without having to spend.
Matt Targett is highly thought of and signing a left back of top value (say 10-15m) with the money we have, could block his progress. This signing says to me that the club believe he can't be far off. Bertrand (who I think is getting some unfair stick on here) can be our insurance. He's on loan. He may start the season and then find Targett displace him or even Targett start the season and then nlbertrand comes in when the club want to protect the young lad. Remember a 17 year old that came into our team October 2012? He'd been talked about for a while. I'm ok with what they'd done; so spend the money elsewhere.
Correct. Okay, he's definitely not world class, but he's not as crap as people are making out, and he's certainly no Danny Fox.
This is probably one of the best things about it. Maybe we are after other people that haven't made the news.
It's pretty funny that the main justification for signing him is "well, he's **** enough that Targett will probably get in"
I would prefer us to sign the best two candidates over the next three transfer windows as opposed to the top six candidates in one window. I feel like at some point you are buying just to buy. So a one year loan as a bridge until you see if Targett can do the job or find a better player seems reasonable to me. I don't mind the loan so much as that it seems to indicate Targett is our starter. That makes me nervous. But it is also a strong vote of confidence in Targett, so that's a little exciting. That or we're going cheap!
That's probably because he was actually a good player. He wouldn't have been anywhere near a world cup final if he wasn't. The fact his career went downhill after that could have been for any number of reasons. Different surroundings, tactics, manager, influences make for a different player. I remember how terribly underwhelmed I was by Chris Marsden but as it turned out, he just fit here. My point is / was (and maybe Marsden isn't great example) He has talent. He wouldn't have achieved what he has, if he didn't. Will we be a good fit for each other?... lets hope so.
Or perhaps he is, but if the **** hits the fan quickly we need someone who has played at this level before. I'm fine with this, and fine with Taïder's loan, because it's only to get Osvaldo out - but I want to see some more financial commitment from Saints...
Yeah; I'd rather have a problem where we have two good players at a position (as we did when Chambers forced his way into contention) rather than going for a mediocre option and risking the possibility that Targett isn't ready to start the vast majority of the time, at which point we have a hole at left back.
