Many racegoers may not be familiar with Irish trainer, John Kiely, who trains at Dungarvan in County Waterford. He is not a man to seek the limelight but, since taking up training about twenty years ago, he has built a reputation as one of the shrewdest in the business. He only has a relatively small stable, and has very often paid his way by winning Bumper Races and then âselling them on.â What is very interesting to note is his wonderful ability to âplace horsesâ and, last time I checked, he had the best percentage return for âplaced National Hunt horsesâ of any trainer in Great Britain. His win percentage is very good, also. You may have noticed that he ran three horses at Galway tonight. Two of them bolted in at 4/1 and 12/1, and the other ran unplaced. Indeed, from his last twelve runners, he has had seven winners, two seconds, and a fourth. It is worth mentioning that tonightâs two winners, Carlingford Lough and Saint Gervais, are both entered later in the week at Galway; and Kiely has two entries in The Galway Plate on Wednesday- Head Of The Posse and Wise Old Owl. Whichever one he runs- or both- should be worth an each way bet. Both are priced currently at around 16/1. Also, Kiely makes a habit of running them on the flat prior to hurdles or chases- todayâs loser on the flat, Oneeighthofamile, has won his last three hurdle races following spins on the flat. Worth watching next time! Any further information or comments from members about this trainer would be appreciated.
Nice article Tam. I remember watching Wise Old Owl win early last season and thought him one to keep on the right side of. Haven't seen the final field yet but if a couple of the 150+ rated horses stay in he should have a nice racing weight around 10st10 or 10st12. 16/1 with Betfred and Totesport
That's it Oddy, you are now an author with a world wide coverage. From NewsNow to Pulitzer Prize in no time flat.
Sorry Oddy, my mistake, as it's Tam's article he gets the credit, but as you commented, you can be seen as well. Just go to the "forum" and you'll see the NewsNow link on the right.
As a young jockey. I had the pleasure of doing so as a child as I grew up and watched him ride on his fathers farm riding in the point to points at Dungarvan and Dunmore East Co. Waterford. John deserves success. It is wonderful to see it happening, after all the years of hard work. Away to go John.
I am sure many of you did not have the chance to watch John as a young jockey riding in the Point to Points through out Co. Waterford. It is great to see you so successful. I am very proud of you and even though I live in America I still follow your accomplishments Marianne Kiely Selleck
