Exeter City have no time to acclimatise as Swansea lie in wait

By Western Morning News | Posted: July 29, 2014

    By Stuart James

"Exeter City will barely have time to get jet lag out of their systems before they take to the field for their next pre-season fixture against Premier League side Swansea City at St James’ Park tonight.

The Grecians returned from Brazil – minus their kit, which they left behind as a parting gift to the Brazilian children’s aid charity Onda Solidaria – at 4pm yesterday afternoon knowing, that just over 24 hours later, they have a date with the Swans in their penultimate game of pre-season.

Director of football Steve Perryman, who remained in England as the rest of the squad headed across the Atlantic, admits it is far from ideal preparation to face such high-quality opposition, but the opportunity to welcome the Welsh side to St James’ Park was too good to turn down for the cash-strapped Grecians.

“It’s game that is a little bit too early for us in terms of returning from Brazil, but it was too good to miss,” Perryman said. “How many times to you get to play Premier League opposition?

“We would prefer a few days at home to re-acclimatise after the flight and what have you, but it will be a decent exercise for us, that’s for sure.

“It is a little bit of a risk, I have to say, but we certainly couldn’t turn down going to Brazil and we couldn’t turn down Swansea either, nor would we want to because they have been good friends to us.

“They are opponents that suit us and we suit them because they know they won’t get a kicking, that’s for sure. And it is going to be a football match.

“They are a higher league and of higher status, being in the Premier League. and their football will probably be better. But it is not a bad test for us.”

Jordan Moore-Taylor was the only player to pick up an injury in Exeter’s tour of Brazil and it remains to be seen how bad his injury is.

James Hamon and Jamie Reid were forced to stay in England due to injuries themselves, but Hamon is expected to play some part tonight after a 70-minute run-out for the Under-18 XI against Cardiff City last weekend.

“It was a real shame that the two lads [Jason Pope and Connor Riley-Lowe] couldn’t go to Brazil, so they have been training with me and the youth team and playing for the youth team in various games,” Perryman added.

“They are now fit and strong for the Swansea game and I would think they will play a part, and I think Christian Ribeiro [who played in Exeter’s first friendly against Reading] will play some part as well as he will be joining us again.

“Hamy [Hamon] played against Cardiff and he looks fit and well and trained well, and he is looking forward to a testing season as well.”

Wilfried Bony set to feature as Swansea City target Exeter success

By South Wales Evening Post | Posted: July 29, 2014

'WILFRIED Bony is set to feature at Exeter tonight as Swansea City bid to get in the groove ahead of their Premier League opener at Manchester United.

Garry Monk's men are aiming to build on Sunday's 4-0 win at Plymouth when they face Paul Tisdale's Grecians at St James Park (7.15pm).

And Bony is poised for a first appearance of pre-season against the side who finished 16th in League Two last season.

"The plan is Wilf will play some part against Exeter," said Monk.

"With the World Cup boys we have to monitor them individually.

"We have to make sure they are right before we can risk them out on the pitch, but he should be involved at some point against Exeter."

Monk is again likely to give his entire squad game-time this evening, though Chico Flores (back) and Rory Donnelly (ankle) are doubts while Leon Britton, Marvin Emnes and Jay Fulton are all on the sidelines.

And though Exeter is only a warm-up game, Neil Taylor reckons it is important to get the right result.

"In Minnesota we were trying things tactically but I think now we've move on," the left-back said.

"We said at Plymouth that the result had to be right, and it will be the same against Exeter.

"We have to get the winning mentality going because after this week we have only got one more game and then the season starts."

Here, here,Dragon. Exeter and The Swans' are inexorably linked since that big day back in '03. Good to see the two Club's are on good terms. Are we letting them keep the gate money again,I wonder?

Bony is on for Swansea for the second-half - Montero has made way.

Second-half has begun. Shelvey and Routledge on.
