I haven't been keeping up with the gossip so assumed they where just inventing the rumours but am shocked that we're going to spend such vast sums on average footballers. Saints are selling their stars at huge fees and that deal could be near to 40 million, more names to add to our list of expensive flops.
It is a weird move, I said previously that I think both are not better than what we already have but also appreciate that both excelled under Poch and if he's going to be truly judged on his success/ lack of success with the club, he needs to be able to sign the players that he wants and trusts.
I can understand why Pochettino is keen to work with footballers he has worked with, yet first he should be showing he can make an impact with players already at the club. Both Jol & Redknapp worked with the squad they had (without being able to make signings) and proved their ability to work with the squad in place before players arrived there after. Pochettino is being allowed to spend money on players that are no better then what we have and while J Rod was impressive at saints, he fits into the shane long category so his fee should represent that. I'm not against unfancied players as Redknapp himself signed Crouch but he was signing players to compliment the squad already in place. We already have a big squad, full of players that under perform, are flops and we're just adding more names and I'm just not feeling this at all, in anyway, and Pochettino has to hit the ground running if hes that confident in signing players like J Rod and Schneiderlin.
But me and you both know that 'Arry should still be in charge I suppose we'll find out in time though, I'd rather Poch goes about things his own way, that way if he's a success he can take all the credit rather than having AVB or Tim make a comment to the media saying they could've done well with more time. Though if he's a failure he won't be able to blame the previous management. I want Poch to be fully accountable, I'm very optimistic that he FINALLY may be the man to take us forward, really hope I'm right.
An average manager signing average players at over inflated prices from an average club. If the new manager and all his incoming coaching buddies are so great, then surely they are capable of getting the best out of the squad they inherit ??
Lamela Soldado Chadli Davies Capoue J Rod Schneiderlin I doubt we will be sitting here in a year or two saying these players took us forward. I left out Eriksen as he is the one recent success but I just see a load of names with our squad that won't be good enough under Pochettino to take us forward as to move forward we have to compete with clubs that are better placed. But I hope you're right and we can look back on this and say what a great decision by Levy and Pochettino. Although if it does go wrong then at least our new manager will have a large squad to work with.
Saints are going to have the last laugh when the large majority of these players are flops and their youngsters turn out to be just as good (or better). These players from saints worked as a team unit but they aren't just going to move away to different clubs and be stars.
. To be honest, I detested AVB so much and used up so much energy ranting about the clown that I can't be arsed to argue over this appointment. I was a lot more sympathetic to Sherwood than most people, because I felt he was right to kick arse on some players who deserved a good arse kicking. Regarding Poch, as I say, I feel so indifferent about it, I can't be arsed to discuss him too much.
I wouldn't put Lamela on of the list, I think the kid will be a revelation this season. This is a player who prior to joining was regarded by a number of football outlets to be the best U-21 player in Europe, yes last season wasn't great but there were a number of factors for that. I think Capoue will be another revelation, he did look good in the games he played at CM but his injuries and spat with Tim meant we didn't get to see enough. From what I've seen of Davies, I think we have potentially one of the league's best LB's in the making. And how dare you put Chadli there! Sometimes, and I really mean sometimes, it's the less spectacular players that end up being pivotal to success. All of those in your list can be a good/ important player for us if they reach their potential, whether they will be is another factor.
LB obviously had to be sorted this summer. Another CB, and maybe a Levy deadline surprise. But nothing more than that IMHO. All down to Pochettino now.
You're being over kind, optimistic and I was probably the same once (many years back) but its all ifs, buts, could be, potential to be and managed by a manager who could be good. That for me doesn't excite me as I want to see proof these players and this manager is capable before I even mention top four or taking leaps forward. Probaly the same as SC, after detesting Avb's management and style, I'm losing the energy to say much more about Pochettino and these players arriving so I'll sit, observe and just see how it develops as season is just about to start and we will soon see what we're capable of.
I too detested AVB, I don't think he had too many fans on here. Sherwood definitely done some good things, however I think there were way too many negatives in the end which overshadowed it all. As for Poch, I'm remaining optimistic, mainly because AVB done s**t and Sherwood didn't do much better and so I'm putting faith into Maurice to deliver the goods. He wasn't my preference to take over but he certainly wasn't one I turned my nose up at either. I've read more about him since he took the reigns and my thoughts on him improved a lot, just hope I'm right in backing him. Otherwise I'll look like a tit... Again
Not particularly. I just see these signings in the bracket of Dembele, Dempsey, Average premier league players who on their day can be good and look better at smaller clubs but for the fees involved they are being signed as players who should be exactly what we need to compete with our rivals, I don't see these players as the type we should sign and no better then what we already have.
Perhaps I am but I also try to be what I believe is realistic with Spurs' targets and ambitions. I think we have to rely a lot on potential as we're not a club who can attract the finished product of the level we'd want. Without Champions League football and the financial resources the teams above us have, it's hard for us to compete with them sides without having a bit of luck.
What are your thoughts on Baldini one year on from his arrival? I remember you being quite impressed when he first arrived, but has that changed at all over the past year? 12 months ago everyone was praising the guy, now our fans tend to stay clear of his name.
To add on to my previous post, the way I also look at it is if one of our other signings impressed like Eriksen did last season, we may well have done a lot better in the league. So I'm hoping that this season, a number of the new lads from last season will come good and help reach the potential this team/ squad can reach - which I believe is definitely a top 4 place.
I was more than quite impressed, I think I called him our signing of the season. I have said several times, I have no doubts whatsoever, that the summer signings of 2013 will all prove to be astute signings and Baldini will eventually be credited with the praise he merits. I like the way the guy works, I like his thorough research of the players we are monitoring and I like the way he goes about our business and so keeping it under the radar. He watches a lot more players than the media link us with and that is not easy.
I wonder if we're trying to improve our homegrown quota or if that's just a lucky coincidence? Both Schneiderlin and Rodriguez would count towards it.
