Premiership? Can tell they're living in the past. On Maguire I can't remember ever seeing him play apart from at Wembley, so I don't have an opinion other than what I've seen Sheffield United fans say of him. Still, he's not costing a huge amount and if he's good enough for Brucey he's good enough for me.
Club Statement. Sheffield United rejected an offer from the Club five days (Wednesday) ago for defender Harry Maguire. This was the Club’s final offer and we have since entered into discussions with other transfer targets. In light of Sheffield United’s statement this morning the board will meet with manager Steve Bruce this afternoon to determine whether we now wish to pursue the transfer after the South Yorkshire club's apparent U-turn. The experts saying that we have a real bargain. I back Steve Bruce and his judgement above anyone else.
Club Statement saying we haven't put in a new bid, Sheff Utd looking like right mugs now! http://www.hullcitytigers.com/news/article/1415-maguire-statement-1786682.aspx
I don't understand why we need another CB Davies Chester Bruce Mcshane even Figaroa and now Maguire wont it be difficult keeping everyone happy?
Just as I thought. We had declared our interest over. Knowing that we were the only team really in for him, and that he very likely wasn't going to sign a new contract, the greedy pricks realised if he didn't go now, they'd get no money for him whatsoever later. Ergo, they had to accept an earlier bid. Clough said yesterday that he couldn't be bullied by us into selling Maguire - well it seems your lot have bottled it, Nigel.
We mightn't have MaGuire yet http://www.hullcitytigers.com/news/article/1415-maguire-statement-1786682.aspx
Why? CB wasn't exactly a weak spot for us last season. Up until the last few weeks of last season when the Cup final became a distraction for the team our defence was our strong point, and the weaknesses in it were Elmo and Figgy at fullback. The only CB to leave this summer has been Faye, and he only played in 3 league games and a few early cup games last season.
Surely you start with improving the weak points not the strong points? There's limits to how many you can do at a time and we're likely to have 2 new fullbacks, 2 new wingers, and a new central midfielder. The back 3 (2CB and GK) would be the 9th, 10th, and 11th priorities for positions I'd be looking to improve this summer.
I think given the number of games we will have this year, if we make the group stages, to not strengthen all areas would be foolish.
I disagree, Bruce made it clear on Saturday that he plans to play three at the back again this season. That being the case, we need three first choice centre backs and one for cover, I think we have two first choice centre backs(Chester/Davies), we have first choice cover(McShane) and second choice cover(Bruce and Figgy - who I'm sure we'll get rid of if we can). We've tried to sign Lescott and Dawson for that role and I have no doubt that we're still trying to fill it.
Everyone keeps forgetting we are in Europe yet still Premier league is more important so if we have enough players in each position to be able to play two teams then for me that's the way to go especially in the early rounds. Resting key players at certain times will be vital to help our position in the premier league which is still our number one priority. I know its unlikely we will play two teams but injuries, tiredness ect all take there toll so the more cover we have will be so important in the coming season
I would assume so. We've also got Brady and Elmo who can play those roles, so if we're going 3-5-2, that covers us for two in each full back position. I'd assume we'd go with Rosie and Robertson/Dudgeon if we're going for a flat back four.
Just struck me as odd to sign genuine wingers like Snodgers and Ince then genuine full backs like Robertson and Jenkinson but focus on 3-5-2 with wing backs. Having said that, Robertson and Jenkinson definitely have enough positivity, skill and pace to be highly effective wing backs. 3 CB's, 2 wing backs only leaves 3 other midfield spaces though for Thudd, Livermore, Snodgers, Ince, Brady, Meyler, Quinn, Boyd to fight over. That's real depth.
I would agree with Lambretta and say centre half is possibly one of our weak points. Not in terms of numbers, and Chester/Davies are fine, but I would still have question marks over Bruce/McShane/Figueroa making up the numbers as the 3rd centre back week in week out. I would look to get rid of Figureoa from the wage bill for a start. A proper central midfielder would be next on my wish list.
Bruce's recruitment is with the fact aluko, Brady, Chester and dudg have all been hindered by injuries! So if we lose one or even all of them we'd be up the creek! That's what SB is addressing ( I think )
I think Bruce frequently found himself limited for options last season and he's trying to remedy that. He's bringing in players that can play more than one role, Robertson who can play LB or LWB, Jenkinson who can play RB or CB, Snodgrass and Ince who can play as wingers or second strikers, we're going to have far more flexibility than any other Hull City side that I can remember. I think Figgy, Boyd and Quinn will be lucky to see much action outside of cup games, they might not even be here.
