Seems the reverse psychology from Steve Bruce worked. It appears that Sheffield have "reluctantly accepted" a bid from City.
Bruce is a genius, 36 hours after saying that we'll walk away, Clough is forced to say that the deal isn't dead in their view. Basically admitting that they ARE willing to sell despite everything they've said before, suddenly we've had a bid accepted and he's on his way. If we've paid more than £3m I'd be very surprised, hopefully he'll grow into the prem quality player Bruce sees in him.
Agree, Bruce has played it absolutely perfectly. Think Clough showed naivety in his comments over the weekend which played into our hands though.
For those who haven't seen the link on Sheffield United's Official web site. http://www.sufc.co.uk/news/article/20140728-maguire-update-1786224.aspx?
I get the feeling that most were fairly indifferent, though it's always nice to get one over on the Blunts.
If he's the last CB we sign I'd be disappointed, but if we go on and sign another who's got experience then you have to congratulate Bruce and the management team for looking to the future as well as the present. Nothing wrong with strength in depth, especially when it's young players with a bright future
Problem I have with this deal is that I have pretty much not seen a person on any of the Sheff Utd forums who think he will cut it at this level and for the vast amount of people who think this, I don't think it is out of bitterness. It just seems a lot when his own club fans don't think he will make the grade in this league and think his drifting, positioning and pace will hold him back. I obviously trust Bruce and his judgment because he obviously sees potential to make him a good enough player. With the current defenders we have who can bring him on and Bruce's experience as a defender also. It's also not like Bruce hasn't signed a few duds in his time with us, Sunderland and Wigan. But then again I suppose all managers do.
Haha, the greedy ****s probably realised that he'd go for nowt if they didn't let him go now. I'd rather have Robertson and Jenkinson, but having another defender always helps add to the squad depth which we will need this season.
I think that's called backtracking. If I recall they were raving about him until we started making bids.
Possibly ? Then again it could well be a case of Maguire telling the Blades that he will see out his contract and leave for nothing or next to nothing at the end. £2m plus add ons for a league one player is more than enough ffs.
Probably the player went and said "I'm not going to be dictated to by a **** league one club, I'll go in the summer for nothing then." Did we actually increase our offer? Or have they just rekindled interest at what was our previously rejected offer? Either way it's a lot of cash for a league one centre half with the pace of a ten tonne skip.
Likely the latter. No other teams seem to be showing interest like we have, and he probably won't sign a new contract after his comments earlier this month. We have a bid already there ready to accept. If they didn't, he'd be going for nowt later on.
