But you could never get a 747 in to take off & land there. I did say the bigger jets. Personally I'd be much happier to see an expansion of Doncaster, a much better experience than Kirmington (Humberside)
Worst airport: Tel Aviv The airport itself is OK, the security is like taking the bar exam, sometimes there are passengers still going through customs as their plane is taking off Typical questions include, "When you were in Isreal did you meet any Arabs?".. "Did an Arab person give you anything?", "Did you make friends with an Arab?, "What is here in your bag?" (pointing somewhere on the bag), "Please open the bag".. "Now my colleague will ask you the same questions again.. this way please.." Enter backroom.. uniformed interrogator demands, "Why do you only have this one bag?".. "because I like to travel light.." "Where are you going?" "To Greece and then back here to the kibbutz where I was staying" "Will you bring anything back from Greece?" "How the f**k do.. I mean erm I doubt it" "Do you know people in Greece who will sell you things or ask you to transport things?" (Like I'm going to answer yes to that Mate..).. deh No "Spread your legs please" "Is that a cattle prod?" et cetera..
I like East Midlands, cushty little airport. Enough to cater for everyone, a smoking area, plenty of space to sit, great little airport.
Worst Ive been through are Corfu, Heathrow, Berlin Schonefeld which is waiting for the new Berlin Brandenburg to open. Best was the new Hong Kong airport on Chek Lap Kok island, fantastic.
Ye i like East Midlands. Easy parking anarl. Ever been from Birmingham Bob? did it once years ago, airport was all fine but been on a plane surrounded by depressing Brummies was ****ing awful. I'm pretty sure they were happy but just sound so depressed.
Best thing for me is it's 10 minutes down the road. I walked back from there from a warehouse party one night when I couldn't be arsed to wait for a taxi to come out.
That doesn't make sense. What I'm saying is that when you get there 2 hours early they aren't ready for you. The person at the front of the queue isn't being served. So what's the point in the queue? If they just told us it was 30 mins later (ie the truth) then everyone could be done in exactly the same time but without all the waiting stood up.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Stansted, apparently it's virtually hell on earth - endless queues.
I gave up flying in 1991. It's ****. It'll fook the world up too. Travel the continent by train - use Seat69.com. Job done.
Got a phobia of heights and flying - so only been to few airports, though I live under the flight path of one. My favourite was Munich, did have a disaster at Charles De Gaulle in Paris - as managed to walk out of the baggage area without collecting my suitcase (this was years ago), and this is probably really dubious but somehow got back into the baggage area after walking around for a bit and going through a door I probably shouldn't have gone through.
DeGaull airport is the worst. They always managed to lose my bag when returning from Brazil. Always asked if I would pick it up at Humberside, always told no you will deliver it to my door you stupid frog bastard s.
Good ol' English diplomacy. Sometimes it's the only way to go. BTW, the wife has just accused me of turning into Steve McClaren. I was on the phone to a lovely Cypriot lass called Eleanor, hiring a car. She spoke perfect English, but with, not surprisingly, a fairly heavy Cypriot accent. Apparently the longer our negotiations went on, the more I started talking in a faux Cypriot accent, mimicking her. Mrs S was pissing herself at my unintentional swarthy Mediterranean dialect at the end. Mind you, she has necked a bottle of the local Rosè. Drunken mare.
A good old Charles De Gaulle airport, where it takes 2 and a half hours to get from the plane to get on a train - and 2 of those hours stood in the train ticket queue as they don't accept cards. Outstanding. Safe to say, the Canadian's in front of me were MUCH less diplomatic.
I did Berlin to Amsterdam by train. It took 8 hours but it was surprisingly good and comfortable. Much cheaper than flights and when you consider the waiting around you're avoiding there's barely any time difference really.
When I did that journey in 2001 it was around 3 hours. Of course, the twin towers came down during that trip so...don't know how to finish that sentence.
Nicest airport i have been to is Hilo on the Big Island Hawaii, no queues even at security and the departure lounge is actually that - a lounge the even has proper armchairs Dubrovnic in Croatia was the quickest I have been to, we went on holiday a couple of years back and was in the hotel within a half hour of landing - absolutely amazing! Worst was probably Naples - bloody chaotic from start to finish!
