News of The World Hoops eye Cannavaro June 26, 2011 QPR are lining up a sensational move for Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro. Defender Cannavaro, 37, is available on a free after being released by Dubai side Al-Ahli. Hoops owner Flavio Briatore, who wants to land a big name to mark the club's return to the Premier League, would love to bring the former Juventus and Real Madrid star and fellow countryman to Loftus Road. Cannavaro - who rejected a coaching role at Al Ahli to continue his playing career - said: "I have not yet decided when I will retire." Centre-back Cannavaro is the most capped player in Italy's history and led the nation to victory over France in the 2006 World Cup Final. http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/notw/nol....-Cannavaro.html
SKY: Fabio Cannavaro has no plans to slip into retirement just yet and is being linked with a move to England. The 37-year-old defender is available on a free transfer after being released by Dubai-based outfit Al-Ahli. It had been suggested that he was ready to hang up his boots and turn his hand to coaching, following a glittering career at the top. The World Cup winner believes he can continue competing at the highest level, though, and is preparing to return to Europe. Possible destination Reports suggest the former Juventus and Real Madrid centre-half could be lured to England. Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers have been touted as one possible destination, and Cannavaro has yet to distance himself from the speculation. He is yet to announce what his intentions are for this summer, but he has made it clear that he will not be slipping out of the spotlight. "I have not yet decided when I will retire," he said when pressed on his future.
I jokingly mentioned on another thread yesterday the fortysomething Serie C hardman Hector Kneecappa without realising we were actually pursuing ancient, about-to-retire eyetie defenders for real...
Never in a million years is this going to happen I'm afraid but I'd still take him even with his age. A recent world cup winning captain is never going to hurt!
I've to say it, this is all getting a bit daft! At this rate, the average of the team will be about 93!
He's never played in the PL and at his age it would be a huge risk finding out he's not up to pace... We'll be tapping up Baresi next...
Complete bollocks made up by one of Rupert Murdoch's little chums. These stories come out every week from trash like "The Sun" and "The News Of The World", they hang around for a few days and then, a week later, people forget them and move on to the next bit of gossip carefully provided by Murdoch's journos. It is sad to see Sky "reporting" it: "Reports suggest the former Juventus and Real Madrid centre-half could be lured to England. Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers have been touted as one possible destination, and Cannavaro has yet to distance himself from the speculation." Which basically means that someone at Sky has read the early edition of The News Of The World. I hope that this is enough for you Northolt. I am so sorry that I disappointed you on an earlier thread when I only wrote just line. I will try and write more in the future just for you, as you seem to call the shots round here.
His last season in Italy with a mid-table Juventus he was absolutely terrible and was strongly criticised by his own fans and the media, plus he had a terrible last World Cup...I can't imagine he has improved playing the last year in the Middle East. We would be better off with the Italians Leggrotaglie and Matterazzi, who we have also been linked with, although in my opinion they would also be terrible signings. I really hope none of these Italian rumours are true.
Casa di riposo. I recently lived in Italy where I had a season ticket with Torino so know just how bad these old Italian players are.
Italian football has gone downhill in the last couple of years and with the pace of the PL only younger, hungry to prove themselves type players should be considered if that's where we're looking. Sadly, you get the feeling Flav is star-struck and would be happy to have any well-known Italian geriatric name on the teamsheet.
For me nothing would be more depressing than taking an old has been. I'd much rather make do with the current squad.
If NW is being urged by Tango-Man to get some Italian blood into his team, surely he can dig up some young upcoming talent that is hungry for success, and whose wages are probably minuscule compared to these relics that we are currently being linked to.
The minute an aging Italian emerges as a 'prospect', Briatore and/or Paladini are immediately put in the frame. Unsurprising given their record in this regard... BUT, have to agree with Eamon on this one. The territory is ripe to be exploited by scandal-hungry journalists to make it up as they go along and in so doing influence the latest 'news'. Warnock's made his position clear on transfers. Can't see him being behind the Cannavaro nonsense, so bum story imo.
So he was not good enough for Dubai's Al-Ahli team? I'm guessing he is no longer Prem standard then. Which makes this story a non-starter.
Cannavaro? I heard a Rumour that Rodney Marsh & Stan Bowles are returning. We used to call Chelski the "Pensioners" years ago if some of this rubbish turns out to be true, we'll inherit that title. C'mon you RRRR's
