The company will create a new Centre of Scientific Excellence, one of six worldwide. Construction will begin next year. Chancellor George Osborne visited firm's Dansom Lane factory today to welcome the news. Mr Osborne said: "RB plc is a great British success story and their decision to invest in the UK is testament to the steps this government has taken to make Britain open for business. "A key part of our long-term economic plan is making the UK a world leader in science and innovation, and the new state-of-the-art Centre of Scientific Excellence will help us deliver this, giving greater economic security for hard-working people." In April, the firm was awarded £6m from the UK Regional Development Fund to construct a major new building in Hull. RB Global chief executive officer Rakesh Kapoor said today's news signalled the companyâs commitment to investing in the UK. He said: "Growing our global consumer health business is at the heart of our vision to provide innovative solutions for healthier lives and happier homes. "The availability of effective self-medication is a critical part of the growing socio-economic need to help individuals manage their health and this is more than just a major investment for RB. It is a statement of intent to change the game in consumer health. "It not only shows the importance we place on innovation, but also underlines our faith in the UK as a place to invest in technical expertise and in consumer health R&D." Work has already begun on design and planning for the project and RB expects construction to begin early in 2015, with the site to be operational by 2018. Reckitt today is one of the world's biggest manufacturers of household goods but its roots are in a Hull starch mill. Business leaders hailed the firm's decision as evidence of its faith in the city. Dr Ian Kelly, the chief executive of Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce, said: âThis new Centre of Scientific Excellence is another fantastic investment in the Humber region which will not only secure 1,200 existing jobs but hopefully lead to more top-quality positions being created in the future. âThis great global business can trace its roots in Hull back to 1840 and its founder Isaac Reckitt, so itâs great its long association with the city will continue to thrive, develop and grow. âThe fact the Chancellor George Osborne came up to Hull in person to make the announcement demonstrates just how important todayâs news is. "The £6m grant from the Regional Development Fund has helped secure this exciting development, showing how sensible Government investment can help keep our city at the forefront of UK manufacturingâ. Hull East MP Karl Turner believes the decision showed Reckitt's commitment to remain a major Hull employer. He said: "This is fantastic news for the city. It took a lot of time for the company to make the decision they will continue to invest in Hull but the investment they have made shows they have absolute confidence in the city. "It has secured the future of the business in Hull - itâs good news for the 1,200 employees now and itâs good news for the city overall because it will mean more employment in the future." http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Reck...-21820005-detail/story.html?001#ixzz38OuTRfaP
