I can't believe just how quickly time zooms by! Two years ago next month will mark the second anniversary of Sir Bobby's passing. A few months earlier that year Keane had been appointed as our new manager and after winning the last 2 games of that season the mood around Portman Road was one of optimism for the coming season. The icing on the cake was that our bitter rivals up the wrong end of the A140 had just been relegated and we played a part in their demise. I was holidaying in Crete when I happened to see a headline on the back of one of the British red tops "RIP SIR BOB!" I was dumbstruck for a few minutes as I tried to take in the news. I even had to ask the guy who's paper it was if I could borrow his paper to read the headline. Eventhough Bobby had been unwell for a couple of years prior I just couldn't believe that Mr Ipswich had finally succumbed. It certainly cast a cloud over the rest of my holiday and even the 7-0 demolition of Norwich at home to Colchester didn't quite raise my spirits. You may remember after all the optimism the first result away at Coventry pretty much set the scene for the next 2 years. One of pure frustration! Was his passing some kind of portent for things to come? The urban myth says that everyone (who was there) remembers where they were when JFK and Elvis died. What were you doing when Sir Bobby passed away and will you be marking the 2nd anniversary in any way? If you could pick just one Ipswich game involving Sir Bobby what would it be?
Truly a legend, a much misused accolade but thoroughly deserving in this case. I was in the taxi office where I used to work and one of the girls said, "Who's Bobby Robson?" I said,"It's SIR Bobby Robson to you, why?" She said, "He's just died!" It came as a total shock and it made me wonder how he must have felt when that twat Shepherd sacked him from his hometown club! I bet the bitter taste never left his mouth! Just a small point, jwm, it was 7 - 1 - Cody Mac scored for us!
if anyone hasn't seen it yet, i thoroughly recommend the film/documentary "One Night in Turin", a decent account of the Italian World Cup campaign, the scandalous treatment of Sir Bobby by the English press... Our celebrations at the Town Hall on bringing the UEFA Cup home... I'm in there somewhere!!!
I was driving to work, in Almama de Murcia, i just burst into tears and had to pull over. I was heartbroken. The passing of a great man to a pointless, awful disease. To pick a game involing Sir Bob?. The game that jumps to mind is the away leg at St. Etienne in '81. Probably the most complete Ipswich performance. 28 million people worldwide, including myself and my dearest friends, are affected by this disease (i can't say that word). Anybody that can, should send donations to www.sirbobbyrobsonfoundation.org.uk.
San Pedro best wishes for the future and its not just a glib comment because that terrible disease has taken a couple of loved ones away from me.
For me its was the train station at Plymouth. A very long trip home after a boring works meeting with tears in my eyes. Probably the only time i have cried in public.
I was at work overseeing a delivery of furniture into our new building...The delivery driver had his radio on, and the news came across...Deflated, gutted, sadened, shocked you name it, I felt all of it. My most memorable match with Sir Bobby at the helm, must have been and I go along with SanPedro on this, the UEFA cup away leg at St. Etienne in '81. Another occasion I would like to mention, was something that happened to my mother which included Sir Bobby. We had not long lost my father (her husband) to cancer, and her close friends suggested a walk along Nacton shores. Basically they were trying to keep her chin/spirits up etc following the sad loss. It was then that she expalined they saw this man walking towards them with his dogs. As he got nearer. she recognised him, Sir Bobby. Using her own words, "It was us, him, the dogs and NO PRESS". They spoke about anything and everything, but did not discuss football. You could not buy this time with the great man. RIP Sir Bobby Robson.....Always in our minds.....Your Tractor Boy family
Great Post Steve! He had time for everyone and nothing was too much trouble! Farewell but never goodbye!
