Aww gutted. I was in town the other, it was about half 4 and just thought they'd close for the day. I was going pop in for a new capo and new strings. As good as the internet is. It's killing music shops. Isn't only two left in Hull now? Antones on Beverley Road and Gough and Davy in town?
As already pointed out there is one in the indoor market also. And the piano shop on Hessle Road does guitars and whatnot also, plus the other one done towards Hessle Square on the left. Bad Dog didn't impress me to be honest. Antone's is miles better for guitar stuff. And customer service.
Antones is prob the best but a little awkward for me to get to in a rush , there was one on Calvert lane a cpl of yrs ago too
Strung out audio are pretty good. Back of town in the arcade. I've sold quite a few bits through them too.
One of the co-owners Brian has been a friend of mine and some time bandmate for 37 years. He's always worked in music shops including the old Gough & Davy's when it was based in that building. He's really decent fellow and credit to him he's given it a good go. It was a desperately sad day to see it close down the other week. I really feel for him and his family. For guitarists there is only really Antones and the Hessle Music Centre (and to some extent the 'new' Gough & Davy's - now in the old Sydney Scarborough building). Very sad...
I do indeed Stanley, someone once described them as the 'Itv' of music shops as opposed to the 'BBC' Gough & Davy if that makes sense. They used to stock a particular type of bass strings that Gough's didn't and they were generally cheaper! I bought my first stage keyboard from Cornell's a Vox Continental with the keys colour reversed and a chrome stand! I still have the receipt from 1978!
A mate of mine - Mike Donald (long dead) worked there in the early Sixties. And, if I recall correctly, Johnny Pat did so in the Seventies/Eighties.
Mike Donald was before my time as I was about 11 (1971) before I started visiting music shops. I remember JP at Craven's before he went to Cornell's and indeed the first time I gigged with John was after I walked into Cornell's for a wander around and his bass player had just rung him to say he couldn't do the gig that night and he instantly offered to me. There were no dots just the instruction 'it's in c' etc

Typical Leeds, no bloody class! At least when we do it, we wear regulation Lincoln green undies! Mind you our female students produce a saucy calendar each year. Not quite in the Miff league, but not far short. Naturally I don't look at it as I'm above that sort of thing!
