The Tyne Wear rivalry is now like two irrelevant old bald men fighting over a comb. That. When derby day comes around, you will either be at the match or sat in front of sky sports news or a radio or watching it online. You can't help it, especially if you have a good start to the season.
Of course I will look for the result but I don't want my whole life to evolve around these two fixtures. There is so much more to enjoy in life other than who is top dog in the Tyne Wear derby. And no one outside of the North East cares about either of us anyway. The derby has turned into a really nasty fixture, especially over the last 10-15 years or so. Some of the Gateshead fans told me that they have a similar derby with Blyth Spartans....great, another set of fans to hate
My Uncle Don has never had any time for either of the big two. Been a South Shields fan for years. Bit of a local celeb as he is British sprint champion (over 70s) over a number of distances. Trains at the Heed, but a Shields fan through and through.
Newcastle are my second team. Surprises me that there aren't that many people on here who seem to be of that persuasion.
In terms of local rivalry, yours is second only to United and Liverpool for me. You have displayed a great camaraderie this week for those two flight victims and that's testament to all of you. Great solidarity between your two sets of fans putting rivalry aside for the greater good. I'm not sure if that would translate to the United/Liverpool rivalry, I'd like to think it would but obviously I hope to never find out. Put it this way, if I was in Spain and I seen a scouser in trouble with some Spaniards I wouldn't think twice about helping out the poor binny. On an individual level, I wouldn't discriminate, but as a whole, I can't stand LFC fans, my head would have been firmly buried in the sand all summer if it wasn't for Captain Fantastic's bottle job. The rest of the derbies and local rivalries in this country are shameful, Arsenal v Spurs is just a bunch of rich ****s chucking Rolex's at each other in the crowds, consoling their defeats with trips to The Ivy, then we have the midlands ones, oh dear. United and City barely registers, I'd say if Galatasaray v Fenerbahce was a Vindaloo, the Manchester derby would be a Korma. The Liverpool derby is much more intense, although that's just a Bhuna. Curry derby scale, think I'm on to something.
Got to disagree Terry, I think ours is a lot more passionate and fierce. The policing is like nothing I have seen anywhere else in the country and it wasn't all that long ago that we were banned from each other's grounds! Our derby is a phal
I am. My Granddad taught me to love the region and the people in it first not the colour of a stripe or the players wearing it who don't even come from up there. I've got family from Sunderland and family from Newcastle so I'm not a fan of buying into the inbred, unwashed ****e. Seems self destructive. Newcastle are my second team. They're from the North East. I prefer and take more price in people from the North East to anywhere else in the world. Simple as that.
Agree with second paragraph entirely. Slightly puzzled by the concept of supporting Newcastle, though. I mean, Newcastle....? Eeurgghhh!
I'm glad my analogy system is catching on! No mate, totally understand everybody loves their own derby. I don't understand why Sky don't show yours sometimes, last season it was an early kickoff wasn't it and didn't get shown on tele? I'm sure they showed the Villa vs WBA game instead, coma football.
They tried to originally but Northumbria Police insisted on an early kickoff along with a bunch of measures designed to make life as awkward as possible for away fans. Both clubs have now united in standing up to Northumbria Police which will hopefully see this never happen again.
I don't think this is as rare as many on here would believe. My dad taught me much the same and I always look out for all local teams results (which for me also includes Carlisle and Berwick). I love the North-East and love to see anything that shows the region prospering. I can't go as far as saying I support Sunderland though. My thoughts on Sunderland are hypocritical. I want to see you do as well as possible, provided it's just a step below us. My ideal premier league top 4 would be along the lines of Newcastle, Gateshead. Sunderland, Blyth Spartans, and so on. The problem is that if we couldn't win something I wouldn't want you to win instead. If we get relegated I want you to come down with us - though I'd want you promoted back with us too. I know that don't make sense. I definitely don't hate Sunderland though. It would be good to think the stupid aspects of the rivalry could disappear, but while things may improve between genuine fans, I don't think the stupid parts of the rivalry will disappear as long as we both have the stupid elements of our support - which every team and city in the country has.
Good god no!!! Both of us in the FA cup final????? I couldn't stand it! I think I would spontaneously combust! I'd be a quivering wreck! Besides, would it not be a logistical nightmare if both sets of fans had to travel down to London!!! Hell on!!!
