I think Jose needs to make formation judgements game by game, based on player availability and the opposition!
Great article and makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't be surprised with a 4231 away from home against the big boys as it worked very well at City and Anfield in particular. 433 against lesser opponents and at home could indeed be the way forward.
Hindsight is a great thing granted, but can anybody actually remember why we went 4231 in the first place. Tactically we've lurched from one problem to another. 433 gives us balance and im all for it.
Yep. tbf AVB had 4-3-3 and because Mata was being shoved out wide everybody called for change, and it definitely worked for Mata.
If one of your midfielders is a box to box type, then a 4-3-3 becomes a 4-2-4 or 4-2-3-1 very quickly. It's less about formation than intent/tactics
for smaller sides definitely but for the big away games then a 4-2-3-1 will work. 4-3-3 always beats 4-4-2 imo
