At least that's what the Chronicle are saying.

Newcastle United long-term target Clement Grenier put up for sale by Lyon

Midfielder will be sold if a good offer comes in for him, and while Newcastle United have had interest in the past could the summer spree continue?

Newcastle United have been told to make a “good offer” for Clement Grenier as Lyon admit their star player will leave this summer.

The classy midfielder, a long-term target of Alan Pardew’s, has been told he can move from the French club is the price is right.

Lyon manager Hubert Fournier admitted today that if any club can match their asking price of around €15m, with AC Milan also interested in the player, the Grenuier will be their player

Newcastle saw a move for Grenier come to nothing in January, but remain keen to land such a talented playmaker who would form a superb attacking formation alongside Remy Cabella and Siem de Jong.

Fournier said: “We have already agreed with certain players that they can leave if a good offer presents itself.

“For those who are allowed to leave, there is Clement Grenier, who asked us at the end of the season so that he could find a club to make a progression in terms of footballing level.”

And with respect to Grenier leaving, he added: “We cannot talk about compensating for his potential departure.

“Due to his talent, we will not find somebody on the market to replace him because of our financial means. We will adapt appropriately if he leaves.

“For the moment, we have not had any satisfying offers. There have been propositions because he is a quality player who is wanted a lot around the world.

“But they were not perceived to be adequate by the club.”

If we could sign this lad, and a striker, it would be amazing. Of course, if Milan are interested I really doubt we've got much of a chance

Get him in! Who needs another striker? just play Sissoko Tiote & Anita behind Grenier, SDJ & Cabella.

I'd offer 10mil plus Marv and Obertan, and if their wages are an issue, offer to pay 25% of them or something. They'd get 2 players and some cash, we'd get a star man and a chunk off our wage bill. Everyone's happy!!!

Hope I'm wrong but I think this has come around too late for us. Would be very surprised to see De Jong, Cabella and Grenier all arrive in the same window. Got a feeling Lyon thought they could play hard ball and now they are panicking that we've gone elsewhere and they've missed out on their pay day.

From what I've been reading on the transfer front Grenier is holding out for a move to Arsenal, wait to see what happens.

I don't think we will be buying anyone else. It would be a real signal of intent to go and get him. The competition in midfield would be fantastic.

You also didn't think we'd sign anyone after Colback and Perez though. I think for the time being it has to be assumed we're after one more striker at least.

Both the national and local journalists have been there or thereabouts regarding our business this summer and they're all releasing similar sound bites regarding us being after a big name striker.

Imagine if we just decided to go for it and signed Grenier a CB AND another striker.

Sorry that wasn't worded correctly, I meant in midfield! I don't think I have said we wouldn't buy anyone after Perez and Colback? I think I said historically we only ever do just enough. At present we have done no more than put ourselves in a strong position to secure PL football. Its the next step we never take to gamble on a push for the top 8. I still find it hard to believe we will base don what has gone before.

We have to be after another striker. Armstrong - young and untested. Riviere who has no Premier League experience and his goal record isn't exactly stellar and Cisse going on his recent record will most likely struggle. Doesn't matter if we are bringing on midfield quality if there is no one to put the ball into the net regularly for us.

    Exactly this.
We need to push on and get another striker. Add Grenier and anothe CB to the mix and we are showing intent.

Ah fair enough <ok> Yeah I think as far as midfield goes we're probably done too.

Realistically we're only Grenier, a CB and a striker away from all but guaranteeing a top 8 finish. Fingers crossed!

    Always the hope that kills.
